I am ready to give up here folks! Purchased a new boat in 2005. It was a new 2004 model with a 90 hp Mercury 4 stroke. I understand this is a carbureted motor. Well I had trouble with hard starting from the start (no pun intended). Mechanic said it was an electronic enrichment system and one of the parts failed. Replaced part, covered under warranty. Still had problems with hard starting. New mechanic. Found out motor had 75 hp carbs instead of 90hp carbs installed from the factory. Carbs replaced, covered under warranty. Took the boat out yesterday after it had sat since second week in July. Fired up and then it quit. Never got it started. Half tank of gas, fully charged battery, motor too heavy to lift off boat and dump in the lake! What to do? Is there such a thing as a lemon law for outboard motors? Deer hunting is right around the corner and I think I have just found a place to hang my targets!!! Help!!!!!

Ken,

I am surely no mech a neck but this sounds like it should be a fixable fuel system problem. A bad (soft)bulb in the line? Is the engine LEVEL with the water when trying to start? (not still in a tilted position from the trailering/unloading process?) Is the gas new from this year? And maybe it is an electrical issue--I dunno. But testing by a Mercury certified service department should be able to get it done.

I assume you have covered all of the above but just thinking/asking....... as carbed 4 strokes can cold start a little harder and do need some warming up before giving them throttle but also usually have less issues in general...once running.

Feel free to call if your issues aren't resolved. And by the way--that Merc is bullet proof! lol

Took the boat out this morning after filling it with fresh gas and charging the batteries. Fired right up, died and never started again, not even a pop. Took it to the local Merc dealer and he called and said it fired right up and was running. Did not leave the key with the boat so they had to use some type of remote start. Dropped the key off now we will see what happens. I am wondering if it might be electrical? Have a 375 H&H magnum in the cabinet that I have not shot in a while. Mercury bulletproof? We may still test that theory.
