Spring Time Twitchin'

I just recieved my In-Fisherman magazine in the mail, and there is a large article on musky fishing in the Spring. The article basically describes using bass sized stick baits like the larger Rapala husky jerk, for fishing Spring musky. I have used this technigue for bass before becoming an avid musky fisherman. I never had much luck catching musky, only bass. I can't even remember a musky even following a bass sized stick bait let alone catching one!
I'm curious if anybody has had luck using this technique not only for catching musky but for trophy class fish, and if it is even worth trying!
It seems to me that I should just sick to musky sized baits in the Spring. If I have on a 50" fish I would rather tackle it with 80# test with a Penn and St. Croix combo, rather than 12# test with Curado and St. Croix combo.[:sun:]

Nick,
Muskies love bass baits!! I can't tell you how many Rapalas I donated to the musky population as a kid. I think you lighter tackle would be a blast... if you do it right. Just use a light (less than 100#) single strand wire leader and you won't have to worry about losing that 50 incher. With the late spring we've been having, this may be a GREAT year to toss those "bass baits". Just one opinion.....

Nick I fished the three lakes chain PMTT event last year, Saturday around noon I switched to a bass style rod and bait. Within the hour I caught a 44 inch tiger muskie that placed us in 4th place and big fish of the day, this was during a high preasure and clear skys. I switched up because it works, usualy when conditions are less than ideal for standard muskie tackle. Trust me it works, I use it alot on my home lake.

I'm planning on starting with the downsized "bass" approach this weekend. Small spinners, jerks and minnowbaits will be the mainstay. Unless the fish want something bigger, I think it's a good plan given our spring temps.

I'm looking forward to trying out my new 5" Slammers! Husky Jerks, small Cranes, other Rapalas, Spinnerbaits down to as small as 1/4 oz...all of them catch Muskies in spring.

You dont need a big bait to catch a big fish. I have tons of fish up to 47" in my boat on 5" or smaller baits.

I believe Musky Treats is downsizing all the way to crappie gear and tackle.[;)]

Thank you for the replies. You know about two years ago now that I remember both my Uncle and Mother lost huge fish pushing 45 inches to small bass baits. They where both using bass sized beetle spins both orange in color. If only they had leaders put on. This kills me every time I mention it because they both have yet to catch a legal sized musky, and in a way they lost the fish because of me not tying on leaders. Oh well, just read my quote below, that will explain it![:0]
