Location: Lake Tomahawk, Musky Central, USA | HEY STEVE! I finally got it, let's cancel my training trip and schedule a deul! Haha, yeah right..I know when I'm beat:P Anyone too lazy like the usual me, to get up that early and NOT go kill deer...you gotta do this. First time in years I've been out that early!
I know it's kinda long, but hey you guys might enjoy. Stuff like this is what makes me love Musky fishing so much..der hey. I'm just a little hyped up over this still! STILL! If only I had the cashflow for a headcam
Figured I'd share this..because when it all went down this morning I wanted to call EVERYONE I knew that likes musky fishing. It was WAYYYYY too early. I am extremely impressed with the 8" weagle I purchased now that I know how to run it effectively and keep it above surface.
Well my cousin and her BF are staying up at my cabin..not much of fisher people but last night they wanted to go out after dinner to try to catch anything. I was casting my Weagle that I've been havin problems running correctly and tried something else with it...and solved it. Stayed out til 2am then headed back to our cabin, being so late I decided hell I'll spend the night and hit her at sunrise as we didn't see or catch anything at all overnight. Coolest decision I've ever made, by far. I just wanted to throw that weagle now that I got it runnin like money!
I'll skip the lame game of scrabble with the cuz after her BF passed out from too much wine in boat syndrome. So here we go.....:
Left my dock around 5:15am, headed for the promise waters haha..figured I was the only nutball out in those temps (it was like fall it felt great) only to dang near rear end a row troller who was hiding in the fog..
Headed back to one of my favorite spots and I'll tell ya what..there is NOTHING like Weaglin' before sunrise when it's so quiet out! Swoosh Swoosh Swoosh(I now see what the big hype with the Weagles are about, so worth it!) BOOOOOM, lil guy comes completely out of the water, no hooks..wasn't mad just knew that this morning might just be awesome. Instead of casting back towards him I started throwing out 20 or so yards past the weed edge towards deeper water. Around my 6th or 7th cast, about 30 feet from the boat the Weagle started submerging on me again (still not sure how that happens with me but it does time to time) took a couple feet to correct it and all of a sudden ANOTHER fish, a HUGE ski comes a good 4ft out of the water with the Weagle on it's "nose" (wasn't in the mouth). It happend in slow motion, I've never seen a fish this big since Eagle and we've had a couple definate 50-54's up out here for the past few years especially. I'm sayin it stretched up diagonally #*^@ near 4ft, with tail still submerged. This pig hit right as I was noticing my bait was rollin over belly-up-like every now and then, and sure enough when she broke surface, all three trebels were facing the sky. It reminded me of Shamu launchin the swimmers haha! I dang near crumbled on the spot lol, but I understand the time is the time:) I don't think anything is going to make this scene get out of my head for a long time, however..I mean cmon. I've seen a lot of big fish in my life between fishing/catching, and my dad's taxidermy especially, and always figured the biggest WI fish I've seen in length while out pounding was 55"..verified by my friend too..until I saw this one. The Weagle was like a toothpick, and I bet ya I coulda shoved a cantaloupe down it's mouth, unscratched. I am just going nuts right now, and this happend SEVEN HOURS AGO lol. I had to stay there, I just had to..I finally gave up after an hour on that spot. Oh mannnnnn
Sun was rising now, still really foggy and light chop. Headed over to last years big big ski spot, and after a few casts I noticed 3 different muskies surfacing together off the bow...like whales..again whales like Shamu...None of the 3 were anything near my target so I moved on after watching them (camera ran out of batteries just previous because I was taking too many pics of the fog and stuff).
Well I'll hurry it up the best I can, next spot which is another great spot on the lake for ski's. Decided to switch up rods, 1 with the Weagle and 1 with an original hawgbuster (i'm guessing it's going to be a deadly combination when wanting to switch every now and then) 17.5" smally on the hawg, and 1 smaller 40" ranger musky made a pass at the Weagle not far out from the boat.
Next spot, it's around 8am now, I'm recklessly bringing the weagle in (was getting really tired and I left my sunglasses at the cabin thinking I'd be in sooner than I was) Pannies are feeding on the surface everywhere and I'm half way in and a decent mid 40's ski plows over it, I'm pretty sure it wasn't even trying to eat it..unless it was kinda a slow fish.
This all happend withing about 3 hours time, and it was the best time I've ever had in a while solo ski fishin..not because of the action, maybe a lil because of the beast (oh yes, she will be mine)..but mainly the quietness, and the scenery...Here's 1 pic from around Sunrise if I can get it up here. Just wanted to share this story with you guys, I know I love hearing everyone elses big fish tales. It's a shame this is sorta another "the one that got away" (technically she never touched hooks, that little memory clip is all I think about right now, blew my mind! Can't get away if I never had it!)

Location: Lake Tomahawk, Musky Central, USA | He's recovering from rotator cuff surgery, he's a lil out there if you know what I mean. I waited til 7am to call him and tell him. I probably sounded like a nut on the phone, kinda like my post. I think I ran the WTD's better when I was way younger, as I don't use them as much anymore...ANYMORE hahaha
I can now clearly tell the major difference between my favorite old jackpots, and the one weagle I bought. Each one is definately better in certain circumstances at times. As for casting, I'm afraid to cast my Weagle like I do jackpots because last time I did that, it almost went through a Malibu speedboats window heh. Great 80lb power pro I've got myself, glad it floats unlike the other 9 new baits I've lost. Actually, I'm being dumb for thinking like that hahaha, I have more research to do with this Weagle My dad's voice and instruction is still clear like it was just yesterday that he told me, how to run them when I was younger. Everytime, it's there. Everytime, I see good things:) Ya know, I didn't catch a single fish other than the nice smallie this morning, but for some reason it doesn't matter to me...it never does.
I'll tell you what he thinks of the Weagle I picked up though...he gives me crap for it...says fish will throw them, they are too heavy, bla bla bla...then all of a sudden he came clean and said how jealous he was that he can't fish right now. It's ok, his St Croix Legend is in good hands :P

Location: Lake Tomahawk, Musky Central, USA | Maybe I'll just stick to the Weagle when it's not fully dark out...threw it all night and it was under the surface 75% of the time..gotta get used to what I'm doing when I can see first I guess hahaha. Buddy lost a 40-42"er on a topwater, spit the bait. Solid fish though, it hit like a smallmouth.

| Andy,
Glad to hear you saw a beast. Few nights go by when I don't think about the "one" my self. I'm sure most hear on the board will agree.
It is experiences like this that keep us chasing after these fish. Keep at it and stay out on the water and spare your cousin and her boyfriend from having to play scrabble. I'm pretty sure when they sat down and made plans for a romantic weekend at the cabin that they didn't intend on playing scrabble with their 3rd wheel cousin.

Location: Lake Tomahawk, Musky Central, USA | haha are you my cousins boyfriend!?! nah I know what you mean about that whole deal :P
However, I was asked to show her BF the ropes while out fishing as I did over the 4th. I've got him almost ready to cast for muskies now and I've convinced him all other fish are just bait!!! He/YOU(haha I know it's not but cmon) passes out pretty early hehe.
Anyways man, this isn't the first pig I've seen out there, or outta anywhere else either..but this one, definately blew my mind but was definately the "best" one to date imo. All the nights of little sleep caught up with me tonight though, after dinner with them and my best friend and fishing partner I said I just couldn't take em out tonight. Tomorrow's a new day and I'm going to let him try out my musky set up when I take them out. But hey, they leave monday and tomorrow night we're having a big shindig so yeah..on sunday they can hang out ALONE together, even Saturday night, because the girl coming out with me is down for setting up a tent...love the cool temps :Dhahaha. My boats parked there man..give me a break I'm not going to swim from the landing!
