| Out looking for northerns today and picked up my first muskie!! Trolling a jointed Rapala in 12-13 feet, when I felt a heavy strike (at least a lot heavier than what I'm used to from the typical pike). I got him netted after a short fight - he seemed pretty sluggish.
The fish was hooked in the corner of the mouth and the hooks came out in the net. I pulled the fish out of the water just long enough to hold it up to the ruler stuck on the sie of my boat and then got him back in the water. He measured 31" and seemed really healthy.
Kind of a funny feeling to finally get my first fish. Of course, I was all by myself, so no witnesses. Also, I wasn't fishing for a muskie today, and wasn't using my muskie rod (plus, I always hoped I would catch my first one on a topwater). Somehow it all seemed sortof anti-climatic.
Still, its good to get the first one.[:)]

| The first muskie is not always the best, or most dramatic, but I bet you will never forget it!
Congratulations![:praise:]

| You know the thing which really sets the musky as the king...the gold body and cardinal colored fins (at least when they are larger). The smaller ones just tend to be a washed out Irish green....hehe.
Hey...no kidding around....congratulations, even to one of the Irish. May the next one be larger and on topwater!!

| Thanks, Doc. Funny thing is, if it had been a pike I would have been thrilled with how big it was. Until yesterday, my biggest fish of any species were a six pound walleye, and a 23 inch smallmouth that I didn't weigh.
But since it was a muskie, somehow 31 inches (I'm guessing 9-10 pounds) seems pretty ho-hum. Its crazy, I know. A big fish is a big fish, but I'm probably spoiled by all the talk of 40 inch or 50 inch fish. Its irrational, but that's just how it goes, I guess.
Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Do you know when you might be out in my neck of the woods this summer? I'd love to have the opportunity to show up a slow, dim-witted Trojan on the water.[;)]
Go Irish!!

| Bill...my first musky (a tiger from the Chip) was only 32" and a replica of him is on my wall. To me it was a giant and came as I was fishing for walleye with 6 lbs test and a 1/4 oz jig. The first time is always special....geez, now I sound like some teenybopper movie. May there be many more and larger experiences.
I am coming out for a Minnesota-Wisconsin Muskathon from the 10th of July until the 20th. Will be flying down from Alaska for those dates and will be missing the absolute peak of the second run of Kenai King Salmon which go to 90 lbs....I must be nuts! Or just still be infected with Muskypox.
Big Fish Around,

| Congrats on your first, now the next mission is your first 50 incher. [:sun:] | |

| Congrats on the first fish....I don't remember the FIRST skie I put in the boat, but I can still picture the first one I lost like it happened this morning.
Just a word of caution: don't let the many pics of big fish and the stories of monsters be the only thing that drives you to chase skies! For many it can BE damn hard to get those pigs....enjoy the pursuit, enjoy every step of the way. It could be a while till you stick that PIG we all chase, and I'd hate to see you burn out before you get her.
