I'm considering upgrading my 5/0 and 6/0 standard Mustad 3551. Will the upgrade to a 3x or 4x have a detrimental effect on the action? Since I had a few hooks straighten out on me, I'm considering going to a 3x. Is a 4x overkill? What would you guys recommend?

Thanks

Which lure(s) are you considering changing the hooks on? Some baits it can greatly effect the action and some not at all.

NO matter which lure- changing the hook type will generally change the lure action. It takes surprisingly little weight to change a suspending crank bait lure to a sinking lure, etc. , like wise it can greatly affect the action.

I think all of the baits out there have a reason they have the hooks on them that they do...some reasons mentioned above for sure. If the hooks are rusty, messed up..whatever, just match and change them! Any size hook can straighten out, it's more about how you fight the fish than anything. For example I've gotten some mid 40" fish on one of my ghost-tails and they never had any change to the hooks. A few weeks ago on a ghost tail I got a 23" northern that ended up bending out one of the trebles. Not sure why other than I was horsing the hell out of it when I found it was a northern. Then my last ski was a little chunky 25"er and it bent the hooks on my bait...which were 4/0s...Just something to think about, it might not be the hooks, but who knows...this is pretty interesting it got me thinking.

I agree with others; some baits will be affected more by different hooks than others. For instance, you may find that cranks, topwaters, and gliders will run differently with different hooks. Bucktails, spinnerbaits, swimbaits/plastic this is probably less of an issue.

4X is not overkill. I really like the Eagle Claw 774s... just wish they made them bigger than 5/0! For cranks I like the light(er) wire VMC conecuts. I'd get an assortment of high quality hooks, experiment, and see how your baits run differently with different hooks. My .02 cents

I upgrade all my Hellhounds and DDD's to bigger hooks and they catch fish. Some baits upsizing will kill the action though you just have to experiment.
