| Anybody ever fish out of red deer lodge on LOTW? It's right out of Nestor Falls on Sabaskong Bay. If so i'm wondering how far of a boat ride to get to some decent spots. Looks to be a hike to get out to the blueberry island area (where sabaskong bay lodge is). Any help would be appreciated.

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I've done it on a couple of trips to red deer but I certainly dont think you need to go that far. I was fishing out af a small 16'er w/40hp tiller at the time. We were on all kinds of good spots (by that I mean spots where we either saw, hooked, or caught fish) within a very reasonable boat ride from camp. I would make sure that some cabin maintenance has been done on the cabins before returning. I did not have the best experience with the accomodations on my last trip there some 7 or 8 years ago. I would recommend an old timer as a guide Lawrence Cottam. Ive got his number at home. His father actually built Red Deer Lodge. Quite a character, very knowledgable, informative as well as entertaining. I cant speak highly enough of him. He guides out of your boat. He also guides on Crow for muskies and lake trout. There are others on this site that may also share some of their extensive wisdom (MUCH GREATER THAN MINE) on this area of LOW.

| Youngs Wilderness Camp on Stevens Bay could be another option. Perry and Carol run a great camp. Lodge boats have 40hp electric starts and it is approx. 10-15 minutes to East side of Sabaskong.
We fished Blueberry from Youngs Camp, but when the winds were blowing, Youngs location on Stevens gives you alot of protected bays.
Great food, great staff. |

Location: Bloomer, Wi | I have stayed at red deer the last 2 years and we are going again this year this time in Oct. I cant say this enough these are GREAT PEOPLE, very nice resort and there are great musky spots within sight of the camp. Its very resonablily priced, nice cabins, easy to get to, within 2 miles of a grocery store. Red deer definetly has my business for many years to come. |

| Thanks guys, that helps a lot. I think we will go with them. The price is right and seems to be a good area, lot of options in the area. Saves us a few hours on the trip as we use to launch out of clearwater bay. other places seem nice too....sunset cove i believe its called, halliers, sabaskong bay, red wing and that youngs camp. Red Deer was the first i actually talked to and they seemed like nice people, right price in a convenient location...which is what we are looking for this year. |

Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | Red Deer is a nice camp. Canadian Haven is one I always recommend. They are right across from my cottage. Nice rental boats. The run from Red Deer to Blueberry Island is approx. 14 miles. Depending on the boat you have it's not a bad run. You can save some miles and gas going from Canadian Haven, Sunset Cove or Helliars Resort.
Lawrence Cottam is not guiding this year. His wife needs his attention as they are both up there in years. He is certainly one of the best muskie guides up here. Contact me via this board with a P.M. and I'll give you my email address and phone number here in Nestor. I don't guide, but I've been fishing LOTW for 56 years and should be able to help you find decent muskies closer in than Blueberry and Cedar islands. Good Luck! |

Location: North Saint Paul, MN | My dad and grandpa started going to Red Deer over 40 years ago. It's been a father son trip that's happened every year since. I've been going for the last 17 years. We have never stayed anywhere else but Red Deer. The new owners are absolutely GREAT PEOPLE!! I can't say enough about Ray and Roxanne. This is there third season as owners and they know how to run a great resort.
They are making improvements to the cabins. The previous owners didn't really make any improvements so those are moving along slowly but surely. You won't be disappointed staying there. There are also great spots to fish very close to camp. I would still go to Blueberry however. It isn't that bad of a trip from there. Blueberry is a great spot.

As past clients of both of them I can say that they are both wonderful people and I pray for their good health and God willing they both get back on the water to enjoy the things they've enjoyed for so many years.

Location: Medford, WI | Ron, you will NOT be dissapointed! I've stayed at several resorts the last few years and stayed at Red Deer this past June. Not really any complaints about other resorts, but Ray and Roxanne are amazing people and will go out of their way to help you!
As far as fishing spots, as JoeCal mentioned, there are plenty of spots very close to Red Deer that have big fish. We saw several upper 40's within two miles of camp this summer. Good luck and enjoy your time up there.

| We stayed at Red Deer 2 years ago in August, great camp. We prefer fishing in the east end of Sab Bay, all the nooks and crannys down to Gohere bay. But I also used the Mauser technique and caught a musky right on the dock, and my pal had a nice big mid-40s fish hot on a topwater, right out by the buoy in front of the lodge. Unfortunately he's terrible with speed-change-ups, and doesn't beleive in figure 8s, or he'd have had that one in the net.
I much prefer a place on the shore for flexibility and not needing to completely unpack the car.
Blue Berry Island is a good 8 miles west, there's better options if that's where you're fishing. |
