Finally I don't have to go to labor camp!! This will be my first time off in 2008 except for the day I had to say goodbye to my pooch. Tonight and tomorrow I will be fishing a brood pond for the not so elusive 27"-31" Shoepac's, and then on Monday I'm taking my friends two sons for a week up on the big pond. I hope to get them and myself a very substantial Fittante bill. I've even added the extra insurance by booking Steve Scepaniak for two nights. I hope the
skies have started to eat. If any MFirsters are up there and see an ugly blue Princecraft with a Honda, stop and say "Hi". We are staying at the premier Flagship Inn, and from what I recall from last year the muskies are not too far away.

Best of luck, I hope you catch a monster or two! It'd be great to hear your results when you get back, so don't hesitate! (I'm making my maiden voyage to the Big Pond at the end of this month!)

Word on the street is the pond is "Brutal" this year. Some well known guides have actually started taking clients to other lakes as a result. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Spent some time up there recently, I wouldn't say brutal, that's not a bad enough description! :D Feeding windows are very short and don't seem to be so predictable.

I had a fantastic vacation with the kids, but the muskies did not cooperate as usual. We fished a small muskie brood pond on Sunday, and got 3 dinks. We had 4 180+lbers in a 14' Alumacraft, and it was very reminiscent of a scene from "Jaws" which showed an overloaded boat, and Hooper commented that "They are all going to die!". The first night on Mille Lacs Mitchel got a 37" and I had an upper 40" follow. Tuesday through Thursday produced very little action. We did see a 50"ish and a mid 40" with Scepaniak. I learned more about the "Pond of broken dreams" with Steve, and as usual had a great time. We fished well past moon set on all the nights. The kids did get smallies up to 20", and Grant got a 34" pike. I'm sure the shot of my extended gut was due to me accidently swallowing lots of Midge Flies during our stay, and not from eating eggs, bacon, hash browns, and burgers every day!! At least I don't have my shirt on backwards like last year. Friday brought a warm breeze out of the south, and the muskies did start showing themselves, but no eaters. We saw 3 different 50" class fish, and 5 mid-forties. They sure liked looking at the 12" Suick. One of the biggies was well over 53". I've never seen a fish that large, and probably never will again. The last thing we boated Friday night stopped a CowGirl dead in its tracks! It weighed at least 15 lbs, and was released into the dumpster at the resort! I look forward to fishing with these two young men next year. If you are heading to Mille Lacs, be sure to have a bug net for your noggin!

So what was the deal with the downrigger that you trashed it? I take it that it was already busted up and unrepairable and was most likely tossed in the drink by an upset angler at the time?

The cord was neatly tucked in the rod holder, and I figured that someone just gave up on it. I can't believe an electric motor would work, but I will never know. I realize now those are sorta spendy!
