i had keith @ proedge build me a couple rods out of the croix legend bass mega swimbait blanks and they are simply fantastic sticks. i am considering having him build me a rod for db 10's on the big dawg blank for db 10's and heavier plastics. has anyone thrown db 10's with that blank / have an opinion on using it for db 10's? would that blank be an "ok" cross-over for db 10's and heavier plastics or am i asking way too much from one blank? i used to be a rod / reel junkie now i'm just a lure junkie and trying to keep the sticks and reels to a minimum...:)
thanks in advance,
stan

I too had keith build me the st croix mega swimbait rod. An aside to the rod for a moment, I'd like to say that not only is he a MASTER ROD BUILDER, he is a WONDERFUL PERSON AND FATHER!!! Please, if your considering any kind of custom, please give pro edge a serious look. He doesn't need this plug, but as a consumer, you won't be sorry.

Anyway, back to the blank. I don't think it's ideal as a crossover for dbl 10's. I think it's too stiff and also won't be as good in the 8. I like a rod that is easier to load up during a hookset. Too stiff and I can't keep the rod bent with a boatside strike. Straight rod = lost fish.

Your question was can it be done. Sure!!! Is it ideal? No! I can throw everythin in my box except big plastics, with a 6'3" jerkbait rod. Would I? No.

I forgot to add, st croix just announced their new big bucktail rod, designed especially for dbl 10's. I don't know if they are offering the blanks yet. Keith will have more info.

Randy,

Something puzzles me here. You say the rod is too stiff to use should a boatside strike occur. Why then would you use it at all? Does the lure you're using make that much of a difference with a boatside strike as far as the rod loading properly? Just curious and not calling you on the carpet or anything.

Thanks for clarifying.

hang a pounder off the end of that rod. Then hang a dbl cowgirl. Which puts more of a bend in the rod? When putting large plastics into the 8, the rod loads easier because of the weight of the much bigger baits. It can't be done as easily with a 3 oz bait. The stiffness of the rod become more pronounced the lighter the bait. Make sense?

Yup, thanks Randy. Makes sense. I didn't think about the rod loading with the lure weight, I was only thinking about the strike. Thanks again!
