I like the ABU Garcia reels for their value. One negative issue I have is that after a year or so, even if I clean up the reel, they often squeal or whine when you cast out. Particularly until the spool starts to get wet after 10-15 casts. They never do this the first season you have them. What is the solution (other than buying another reel)? I typically dunk the reel in the water before I start casting and the problem is mitigated. It appears the squeal is from the spool vibrating or cavitation when it it is spinning on the cast, nothing when reeling in. I don't think it is caused by the rotation on the shaft itself or the gears on the level wind, but I could be wrong. More likely the point where the wide outer sides of the spool meet the sides of the reel, if that makes sense. Thanks.

A drop or two of oil on the bearings should go a long way toward solving that problem. Water dunking is a very short term solution and will likely cause longer term negative effects.

Take off the left sideplate and put a little bit of grease on both sets of gears on the white nylon cog gear and also put one drop of oil on the metal post that the cog snaps onto. Then take the spool out and put a VERY SMALL amount of oil on each of the gentrifugal brake blocks.

Where are the bearings on a Garcia 5500 reel?

In the spool, one on each side. You should see the right hand bearing when you take the spool out. The left one you will need to pop off the little nylon cog gear, put a drop of oil on it and then pop the gear back on.

I'm in total agreement, but dunking something that needs oil, in water, should not ever be deemed a "solution".

Well, if you want to get into semantics, if you leave it in the water long enough, it will eventually go into 'solution'...
