There's no question about the effectiveness of the big bucks on the "V". I'm heading up there next season but all I here about is the big fish caught on the D/C's. I personally prefer fishing gliders and topwaters before throwing a bucktail. Would I be missing out on something here? I'm hoping to hear from some of the guys who caught fish on the "other baits". Topwaters and jerkbaits also catch fish on the Big V! I think you hear a great deal about the big blade baits becasue so many people are throwing them, which breeds its own success, but I have noticed the fish on the V are starting to get conditioned to those baits, too. We annually catch fish on top using various baits; at the last tourney several were taken on Hawg Wobbler type baits. Of course, big rubber also scores frequently.

My 42.5 (inch, not pound) came on a Muskie Treats there last week. I only moved one fish on topwater and it did not connect. Bucktails were catching pike so I moved to a Treats and caught, well, more pike and the muskie. I threw an 8 inch glider for a while but didn't get any applause, so I went with the smaller and more certain bait. Saw nothing on the big blades I threw. m

I have personally got over 20 muskies on topwaters on the V( over a few years)
3 of them were 47" + and my PB at 51.5" all on surface lures

Well guys,
I have caught well over 60 Muskies on Vermilion in the last couple of years and none of them were taken on a DC.

Jerks and gliders and topwater baits account for a number of my largest fish.
Shallow running minnow style cranks have also boated a number of fish.

There are a number of people who would like you to think a giant bucktail is the only bait that works. Afterall they have been fishing up here for more than 3 years....

My largest fish (53)
was taken on a Recon surface bait, and 4 of my top five were caught on gliders or cranks or medium sized hair.

Don't leave the hard baits at home!

I'm up at V right now, and literally every musky boat I have seen close enough to see what they are throwing is throwing double -10's - in several cases, 2 or three fishing out of one boat, all three throwing blades! Sounds like Santa Clause is coming to town! Jingle Jangle. I've done well this week and on minnow baits, topwater and had good, hot follows on gliders, that I didn't catch due to my messing up the 8's, kicking stuff in the boat or in one case actually hitting the fish with the rod tip! No need to give the chiropractors more of your money.
Got my PB on a Shallow Invader, then my new PB on a Rapala.

It's all hype guys, nothing more nothing less...it's just like the bulldawgs last year...what's next this coming year? Stick with what works for you...99% of the people out there that are die hard true musky nuts will say their favorite bait is not a DC OR a bulldawg...

I've seen it too, last year most of the guys out pounding, were throwing bulldawgs..it was funny..this year it's all the same guys but throwing DC10s....

What ever happend to people trying different things on their own to see what works, isn't that where the true spirit of fishing is?

Very good point Andy. I was once told this by Larry Jones, "a muskie, is a muskie, is a muskie." I love to try new stuff, especially when you surprise yourself and actually catch fish!

It's a way better feeling for me to do that than come on here and do everything I read about, but that's just me. It's like the 29.75" walleye I got in 4 feet of water throwing a 10" hughes river for skis when I was 15....It's not like I'm going to go throw that thing for walleyes ya know? lol

Vermilion fish are dumb and will still eat anything. There's more to the V than big blades at night on the East side. Apparently the masses haven't figured that out yet. Steve

I agree 100%. They are dumb fish. Why do you think so many are caught on cowgirls? Because everyone throws them like it's a rule. Personally I think they are a pain and try and change it up. Downsize and watch what happens. They will eat anything

I spend around fifty days a year up there and the owner of the resort where i stay has told me many times that a muskie will hit on a beer can or just about anything if it is hungry, the key is to be on the spot at the right time.

Hi guys,

Everyone has there favorites...
I throw everything but catch most all out fish on bucktails & top water.
A client of mine Ken Giesen from Chicago, IL got a 52" last night, on a double # 10 blades bucktail.
No rime or reason they just eat them. You have to know where the fish are to catchem & know where the big ones hang....

Last year at Northland Muskie Adventures Guide Service, we boated 18 muskies over 50" & just shy of 350 muskies total. 80% of our muskies come on bucktails. The 50"ers
15 on double # 10 blades bucktails, (big heavy bucktails)
2 on top water and
1 on a bulldawg.

So far this year 11 muskies over 50"
10 on Big Heavy Bucktails, Double # 10 bucktails(Big Heavy Bucktails)
1 on a Jake

Check out our web site to view the pics & to book a trip with me for your chance at a big one on Vermilion and in the Duluth & Grand Rapids area.

You can purchase our Big Heavy Bucktails at any sport shops in the Duluth area.

Good Luck & tight lines....

I am not saying fish on the V are EASY. I repeat, they are still muskies and never easy. Steve

Seen the biggest fish I have seen on the V casting my middle son's home made 4" tube spinner when he took a break. A fish well into it's 50's. Everything likes topwaters on vermillion.

Never seen as many boats fishing spots as I did last week. With the big wind the north side of pine was busy. The elbow had 7 boats in it one morning, guides were even taking clients to musky fish rice bay. People still run the creek wide open with it's blind corners even in the low light, it's just a matter of time before somebody gets killed there.
