| i'm heading up next week to Lake of the Woods to take part in Operation Muskie. i've got the good fortune of fishing with Steve Jonesi, Paul Klein, and Dick Pearson.

i've never been to the Woods before, and since i won't have my own boat along to act as my normal floating tacklebox, i've got to make some hard choices about what gear to bring along.
i'm going to try and limit it to 10 lures to cover my bases...here's what's on the list for sure so far:
Double-12 bucktail (black/silver)
Double-9 bucktail (orange/copper)
10" Weagle
BS Willy Monster Creeper
Pacemaker
Big Game minnow/twitch bait (black perch)
what else needs to round out the list?

| A chartreuse/chartreuse bucher 700 is one of my old reliables. 4 fish over 40" on it up there in the last 2 years. I would take some sort of crank in firetiger or similar bright color. |

Good list. Having never been there, take my advice for what it's worth.
I agree w/ adding a dive and rise and a big plastic thingamajig of some sort, but since you are limited in space, a slightly more durable option than the one mentioned might be in order...perhaps a purple Curly Sue...oh wait, never mind  maybe a different color...
If I were you, I'd go get an extra camera battery though! |

Location: East Troy, WI | just got back from sab bay, LOTS of follows on tail baits like a top raider... globe had lots of fish hit and miss too...
i had the most action on a rad dog with a Flame blade and orange/black skirt... hope that helps
also, if it looks like it would hold a fish... it does... countless times i'd stop by a rock at an island... and say "i bet theres a fish there... and on the first or second cast i'd have a follow, it was just getting them to hit that was the problem, try to change the direction in mid cast, dont hope on the figure 8...

| i do well on spoonplugs on the rocks and tiger tubes in the weeds on lake of the woods. when they are just following i like to use jackpots as toss backs and work them real slow then take them into the 8. my friend daryl durado does really good on topraiders. i like to troll 3 to 4 mph. my favorite baits to troll are spoonplugs and red/white spoons. good luck |

| I haven't heard too much of it yet, but you might run into a little bloom up there, as it seems to start around this time every year so color should figure into the equation. Darker bodied bucktails with orange and chartreuse blades seem to work well for us. For topwater, i would think a weagle/creeper/prop bait should cover it. Big jake type twitchbaits have produced for us as well. I would also throw in a bulldawg, and depthraider if the fish slide a little deeper.

Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI | The times we've been on LOTW mid-summer there's been 2 standout lures;
Double Cowgirl and a Walk the Dog topwater like a Weagle or Homewrecker. Like the heavier walk the dogs vs. a light one such as the classic Jackpot. Did real well one year on the Bucher Dancin' Raider, that was before the Weagle was out. Caught fish on a lot of different lures but those 2 have been the best for us.

Location: Warroad, Mn | Here's what you need. A couple of DCG's or similar (one light w/silver blade, one dark w/colored blades). Maybe a smaller bucktail to ease the pain (Harasser or Vibrex). A suick or bobbie. A spinner bait or two (Rad Dog, Grinder, or M&G). A tail spinner surface lure (Top Raider or Rumbler both work well). If you are into gliders a Hell Hound or Phamtom. A crank bait of some kind, 10 Jakes or Grandma's work fine. Maybe a 10" believer, probably jointed. Probably all you need, I know the guides will have lots more. Doug Johnson |

| Having just been up there... you've pretty much got all you'll need. I will echo the 10" Suick (unweighted) comment. I'd also recommend a larger plastic bait in some kind of natural pattern (black/silver, walleye, etc.). A prop bait is a must... but I would HIGHLY recommend a Top Walker, if nothing else just in addition to your TRs and globes. IMO, you will catch more fish that hit AND more fish that follow into a figure 8 with the marabou or bucktail tail section. Lastly, you shouldn't leave without a glider. On those super slow days or as a toss back a Manta or Hellhound (or whatever your favorite glider is) is tough to beat.

10" unweighted suick
Topraider
10" weagle
Grinder or Ace spinnerbait
If conditions are right that should about cover it.

| I like to also have a Crane bait, it is a little more buoyant than the Big Game, and it works really well when the weeds are up to the surface. I replace the hooks and split rings on the Crane, the ones they come with are pretty cheap. |

| I would fish a mag dawg and DDD all week - many fish slide a little deeper than most people fish this time of year.

Just have to stop by their boats in the mornings and pick what you need!!!!! Last spring I got an email from Dick one day. Seemed that he took his boat out of storage and found almost 100 brand new lures in his boat he forgot he had. What a problem, eh? Since you have never been up there, be prepared to fall in love! Although it has been a few years since LOTW for me, I would add two lures to consider:
1. 6" Reef Hawg in Cheeto pattern
2. large Tiger Tubes or Red Octobers as throw backs to non-committal followers (black, salt n pepper, chartreuse). |

| ok...i can't believe i'm heading to Canada with this few of baits.
i exceeded my goal of 10 baits by a couple, but i think i've got the bases covered just about right. next thing i know this'll be all i carry in the boat ever...or not...though the reality is that i rarely use all that many baits beyond what's here.

| Going to LOTW with only 14 baits are you crazy? Seriously though that is a pretty smart thing to do, I haul two monster Lakewoods and only use 5 or 6 lures on a 4 or 5 day trip. Now I have to throw every new lure I have but I really only use a couple.
Last time I was in Canada there were 12 of us musky fishing and I asked everybody the last night we were there how many baits they really used on the trip. Other than trying out new baits the general consensus was about 5 or 6.
The only addition I would make to your selection is a 10" Jake or similiar bait. I like pounding it off rocks up there as well as use it fro trolling when the arms need a little rest. |

| from the Musky Hunter LOTW school, there are three baits you need...
Double 10's
Prop Topwater
Walk the Dog topwater
Leave everything else at home.
20 baits MAX will easily do the trick. As I am sure you will be throwing only 3-4 baits all week anyways. You could simply get away with 10 or so Double 10's. |

| Two years ago the fish were up on the rocks and other lures would get follows but
the money bait was a small all orange musky killer. It has the advantage of not taking up much room if youR going light.
The corrilation was seeing numbers of crawfish on the rocks, obviously a guess,
but judging by the delay in the summer progression it may be a value to have a few. It'll look small to the normal lures, but that week 12 of fifteen Muskies came on this one beat to heck lure. All fish were above 38 but none bigger than 45. Eight were on the figure 8.
