Everyone has safely arrived at the 2008 MuskieFirst outing presented by Spring Bay Resort. If you've never been to Spring Bay Resort, all I can say is WOW! By far the nicest camp/resort I've ever been too. Look for full imagery of the resort this week.

Water temps range from 69-70 in the main lake, but some saw 71 in some of the smaller bays. So far the muskies haven't been too shy on showing themselves with many seeing multiple fish.

Reports from the Paul Hartman tournament that was held the past two days were very promising, with 29 fish caught between 50 boats for a two day total. An impressive 54 incher was taken today while a 52 topped the leader board yesterday. A majority came on Double Cowgirls on 7-10ft weed lines. The weather looks to be very stable the next few days and fish look to be cooperating.

Tomorrow morning we'll kick things off at 9am with a presentation from local guide Matt Snyder. He will provide an up to date fishing report, lake orientation, and a on the dock lure demo. He'll be sharing some of the newest stuff by Llungen and Musky Armor gear.

Stay tuned for multiple daily reports, including full imagery, and full fishing reports throughout the week.

Day 2 began this morning with Matt Snyder of Chad Cain's Guide service providing a dock side lure demo and informing the group with whats hot and fish location. Conditions are on the verge to really heat up. Fish are transitioning from weedlines to rock and becoming more active as the water warms.

Matt said Lungen DC9's have been hot as of late, along with 9 inch Curly Sues. He stated colors like Victoria Secret, black and yellow blade bucktails and any other gaudy looking colors have been getting the nod as of late. He also said fish have been located on the secondary break, just off the primary break.

Stay tuned for daily reports.

Conditions were ideal for fishing but not so ideal for catching, but Joe Calhoun was able to put the first fish in the Frabill of the Spring Bay MuskieFirst outing. A beautiful 44.5 incher ate a double 10 Cowgirl on a mid lake rock reef.

The consensus throughout camp was that the fish seemed to be looking a lot and not much eating. Everyone in camp had success contacting fish but all fish seemed to be real sluggish. Multiple fish in the 4 foot class and larger were reported.

Weather conditions continue to look ideal with highs in the 70's and evenings lows in the mid 50's. Tomorrow afternoon, Rubberhairy Tackle owner Eric Larsen will show off some of his product along with any local information of the lake.

Steve Amundson from the resort got a couple on Sunday as well, at 36" and 42" by fishing the thick slop weeds in the far back of some bays near camp.
he scored a nice bonus pike as well.

everybody is out fishing right now, the only boats at the dock are ours as we're back for lunch

i lost a nice one on a creeper in the weeds last night, and two of unknown size on a tube off the rocks this morning. plenty of action, we just can't seem to keep the hooks in 'em yet...

Thanks to Eric Larsen of Rubberhairy Tackle for taking time to stop by the docks of Spring Bay Resort to fill us in on some of his soft plastic product. Eric was also kind enough to donate a bait to all participants who showed up for his demo and answer any questions regarding Lake Vermillion. Thanks Eric!

This morning fish were cooperating in the fact that they were willing to show themselves but with light winds and high skies, they just seemed to be checking things out. The big fish have definitely begun to show up more and more on the rocks with medium sized plastic being the bait of choice for my boat this morning. Back to fishing now, more to come later this evening.

Joe Calhoun(aka JoeCal) is yet again the man of the hour with a beautiful 48 incher eating the same black and flame Cowgirl on a mid lake rock reef. The fish were definitely on the move tonight at sunset.

A small weather squall moved through the area bringing high winds and making boat position tough this evening. By 8pm things cleared off and allowed for the group to get back to the reefs. Fish movement overall was better than yesterday but fish were still a bit reluctant on committing. Still no consistency with bait preference but plastic and slower moving baits have drawn the most overall attention with the exception of Joe C and his custom color Cowgirl.

Multiple fish were lost this evening either at boatside or not setting hooks, meaning me, doh, but things look good for tomorrows run to the East side.

Today looks to be a gorgeous day on the water with sun all day. Temps will be in the high 70's with light winds out of the ENE 8-10. The afternoon bite seems to be whats going but lots of fish starting to show themselves throughout the day.

The Mackenzie cabin all look to be heading East for the day to see some new water. Reports have been a bit better with fish willing to commit a little more often.

argh!

we had about a dozen follows yesterday on plastic swimbaits as well as an absolute toad that came in at Mach 4 behind a burned bucktail but split when the bait went into the L-turn. i'm incorportating more mid-retrieve direction changes starting today because the fish have been pretty boat-shy for us. the big fish was one of the larger fish i've ever seen. we'll be camping there...

we had 6 or 7 fish blow up topwaters last night, about half were drive-by looks but a couple were serious attempts at the bait. the BS Willy monster creeper and the Pacemaker showed us all the action right before moonrise again.

the one fish we got hooks into yesterday was mid-day on the rocks with the 10" Weagle. unfortunately, it was in extremely shallow water and went airborne and threw the bait. here's the video:

What is the pressure like up there? I am interested in the opinions of the people that haven't been up there before as well as the seasoned Big V vets.

I am coming up there for the first time in early August and the horror stories of the legions of musky boats concerns me.

Bytor, there are always a lot of boats on the "marked" areas. BUT there's so much other water, and a lot of mid-lake structure that you can get on without a problem. There's a lot of lake to fish. Typically, the East gets punded pretty hard, you find a reef and camp it for hours on end, it seems. You can go West and have a lot more choice of water, albeit not the same as on the Eastern portion of the lake.
It is a great lake, any way you look at it.

What is the pressure like up there?

we keep laughing about it..."too many boats here, stay home." lol.
there's more good spots than people, you just have to be willing to get out there and do something more than fish the community spots. the West Arm in particular isn't bad, and that's even with our outing adding to things.

we finally got one in the boat tonight, 42"er on topwater over the weeds. every cabin has fish in the boat, still looking for something truly big.

Here is Wade Rimer(aka Wader) with a 42 that ate a spinnerbait slow rolled on the rocks in about 12 feet of water. The fish actually hit it once, missed on the hookset, then came back and ate it again.

Like Lambeau stated, every cabin has a fish in the boat. There was a 42 caught by Wader on a spinnerbait, a 42 inch muskie and a 40 inch pike for Mauser, a 42 by Lambeau and a 40 1/2 caught by Got Esox on a orange and gold double Cowgirl.

Wader's 42 release:

A big thanks to Ace Sjoberg of Ace Guide Service for stopping by and demoing lures from Hawg Seekers Tackle and H20 Tackle. Also a big thanks to Roger Waters with the very generous donation of baits.

The fish seemed to be on the move today with a few fish in the net. There will be a steak dinner provided by Joe Amundson and Spring Bay Resort at 5pm tonight, it should be a wonderful meal.

Joe Amundson, owner of Spring Bay Resort and company put on a steak fry for the entire camp. Everyone who attended was served a steak, potato, and drinks. At the end of dinner, Lambeau gave out some of the baits generously donated by H2O, Mojo Tackle, Tacklebooty, and Figure 8 bucktail to everyone who attended the outing.

The fish action seems to continue getting better as the week has progressed but keeping hooks in fish and getting fish to commit have been the struggle for many. But with chance of showers coming the next two days, things can only get better.

I agree, that much fishing knowledge in one place and nobody could get that hook out? Good position and actually a good hook to pull because of it's size. That would have been an easy one.

While Lambeau was off at the hook removal wing of the Cook ER fish were being moved. Russ Williams took this 45", with a spinner bait, out of a grass bay. karl knuth caught this 43" ten minutes after the 45" was released. He was using a small bucktail in the same grass bay. Both were happy to have 2 fish in the boat and remained hookless for the rest of the night.

A shot of Jack Black and a good Yank would have done the job getting that hook out

Why does Sorno look so grouchy? Is he wearing blue and yellow pajama bottoms in the one pic? Forget your pants in Utah big man? Then he's got a steak in front of him and he's not smiling. Obviously, pike don't cheer him up much either.

Get some darn hooks in a big musky, mountain man. I want to see you SMILE.

after 3 tough days with east winds and high skies, the weather changed today with rain, clouds, and wind from the south. the fish responded nicely.

everyone is having a blast with one day to go. fish fry and awards ceremony tomorrow night at The Landing.

the next time you take a 7/0 in the leg, give me a call and i'll come right over to pull it out the "easy way"...

i decided to get back up on the horse that bucked me, so after replacing the hook that was in my leg, i tied on the BS Willy monster creeper that stuck me last night and put it to work on one of the spots we'd seen a nice fish earlier in the week.
karma payed me back with a 51.75" beauty on the BS Willy monster.

after a few celebratory brews and some dinner, we headed back out and revisted the fishing spot where i got stuck the night before.
karma repayed me again with a fat 45" that ate the 10" Weagle.

Day 6 of the Spring Bay Resort M1st outing has dawned hazy and overcast with 30% chance of precipitation. The fish were definitely on the move yesterday with many seeing multiple fish and catching multiple fish while others couldn't seem to keep hooks in fish.

There will be a fish dinner served complimentary of Spring Bay Resort this evening at 5pm where things will wrap up with awards and the free weeks stay at Spring Bay Resort will be given away.

Stay tuned for the final days action!

Looks like fun up there. I know somebody up there right now, they boated 5 yesterday over 41" and have three over 50(50, 50.5 and a 53.5) in the last 36 hours.

Coincidence or Karma..?

M1st moderators getting hooked at M1st outting and catching nice fish..? I distinctly remember Worrall having to cut a 5/0 out of my finger at the first Cass Lake event about 6-7 years ago...

Looks like a great trip guys...wishin' I was there instead of in the office typing this.

Im getting stumped to the ground out here, both me and Porterhouse are seeing some big fish following our baits but we just cant seem to get them to open their mouths, we did have a couple chances early in the week but we did not connect, we just don't have the Mojo this week, Lambeau and others really have that mojo to make them muskies eat, we are seeing plenty of big fish but getting them to eat is a whole other story, I guess you cant win em all, maybe one of these years I will stick a 50"er, all I can do is keep trying, the lake is amazing out here anyways, it sure beats being in Rockford IL, I am sad that I have to leave tommarow, we have one more chance at fishing tonight, right now its high pressure and partly sunny, we will be back on the hunt after the awards dinner, I win the Skunk award for the outting....lol P.S Joe at SpringBay has a top notch resort, its one of the best I ever stayed at. Lambeau put together a great outting and the planning was very well done. Everyone here is good people and I had a blast regardless if I catch fish or not, Porterhouse went out of his way to try to put us on fish, he is a great partner, My head will be hanging low tommarow when I have to leave this place

The 2008 MuskieFirst outing presented by Spring Bay Resort wrapped up this evening with a fish fry from the Landing restaurant just down the road. All participants were served an all you can eat fish fry with all you can drink, courtesy of Spring Bay Resort.

Congratulations to Joe Calhoun (aka Joe Cal) for winning the largest fish award and taking home a free weeks stay at Spring Bay Resort for his use anytime, a Stowmaster net, and $50 worth of lures from Tackle Industries.

Fishing was tough today with winds switching out of the west 20+ mph and partly cloudy and clear. Fish were seen throughout the day but no takers as of this evenings dinner.

MuskieFirst would like to thank all who donated prizes and for everyone that made this outing what it was. The folks at Spring Bay Resort are first class and I would highly recommend anyone interested in visiting Lake Vermilion to check out their website:(http://www.springbayresort.com/). Get a hold of Joe or Steve Amundson. They can truly make your trip a memorable one.

There were 34 participants that included one from Utah, two from Ohio, one from Pennsylvania and others from across the midwest.

Fish sizes ranged from 34 to 51 3/4 and I believe their were 18 fish boated before dinner tonight. Most fish came on big bucktails and topwater.

So a little more than half a fish per guy. Who claims the head and who claims the tail? If you claim the tail you can squeeze a little more length out of it because you could pinch. The head end, however, is much more fearsome and impressive.

That looked like a pretty good time up there. Good work, everybody.

I don't know if the total includes 4 caught by the three individuals in our cabin and six more in the boat by ohers who were not part of the outing. 40-51
We were on kind of a different schedule than most.
Jason's is pictured below.
Will try and get some others up.

thank you to Joe and Steve and everyone else at Spring Bay Resort along with all the other sponsors who made sure everyone who came went home with something.

i was blown away by the quality of the resort and the great job they did hosting all of us while we were there. driving home today i told my wife, we WILL be going up there. if you're heading to Vermilion, do yourself a favor and book with Spring Bay.

it was great to see everyone and put some faces to names of new friends, as well as spend some time again renewing things with some old friends. thanks to everyone who showed up and shared the fun. it seemed like everyone was having a good time, the outing events were well attended, and the fishing ain't half bad up there either...

here's a few more pics from the last night out on the water.

I'm not sure how much I can add but I'm in total agreement about the quality of the show that was put on by Joe and Steve at Spring Bay. That is a five star performance. I'm reasonably sure that I will be back there again some time.

To all the sponsors - a huge thanks. I don't think I've ever seen so many Mojo caps in one place at one time! Lots of free prize baits were also in circulation throughout the entire outing. The dockside demos by Matt, Ace and Eric were very informative and highly entertaining. Thanks to you guys for taking time out of your fishing to show up and give us all a few pointers.

To MuskieFIRST - a huge batch of gratitude for putting on these outings. It's a unique opportunity afforded to the users of this site to be able to take advantage of things that not only make you a better angler, but also offer the distinct probability of forging some lifelong friendships. I'll keep coming to them for sure.

Did I get a muskie? Nope. Do I care? Nope.
I had a great time and this outing will go down as one of my favorites.
I got to see some things...truly amazing things.

I would like to say a quick Thank You to Spring Bay and Muskie First for putting together a very cool week. If you are headed to the west side you can't do any better than Spring Bay. Great place and great people. No muskies in the boat for me (did see some monsters cruising), but the info that I am taking away from the last week is sure to put me on fish in the future. What a great experience. I would also like to say thanks to Ace for donating the day guide service that I won. Very knowledgeable guy who knows the lake and knows the fish. He also has a few good stories to go along with it. Thanks to everyone who made this a very memorable experience!

I was thinking the same thing, along the lines of "I'm not done with that lake yet." We just got in at noon today, so just a quick note of thanks to our wonderful hosts Joe and Steve, to lambeau for putting it all together and for the folks who came to make it all happen. We went 2240 miles for two muskies (two GOOD muskies!), and you'd think that's not good muskie mileage. But, the wonderful folks, beautiful scenery and fantastic accomodations made the trip well worth it.
I think my fish pic is on this thread somewhere but here's a couple shots of Mauser's 42 and his 40 inch Northern, and another pike that got us thinking of CJ's Pike Service as a sideline? Thanks, folks, more later. m

I want to thank MuskieFirst and Spring Bay Resort first of all for making this trip possible for everyone. Secondly, I'd like to thank Jerome Morris for making it possible for me to get out and fish...we didn't get too many muskies, but we sure had a hell of a time on and off the water. Plus, there are many stories from the trip that I don't think anyone on our boat will forget (heron...).
If someone were to ever tell me that I wouldn't catch a musky on a fishing trip, I would more than likely be very dissapointed and consider the trip a failure; however the guys I met and new things I learned were more than worth making the trip.
Lastly, thanks to all the sponsors of the outing. I've purchased several of the sponsors' products in the past and will definitely continue to do so in the future.

Thanks to everyone for making this an awesome time, Jake Bucki
