Hey guys, just got back from Ontario, and the weather was brutal all week. The mayflies had a hatch last Saturday when we arrived. On Saturday evening we raised 4 muskies, but all smaller fish, on big fish spots. Then that was pretty much it for the next few days, got some bumps on topwater from smaller pike/muskies, but was hard pressed to raise one even close to 40". Thursday the weather kind of broke ( well, less rain at least) and I caught my pb, 51x20. I'm looking for guys who were up in the vermillion bay area this week, how was your fishing? And you guy's who got a little biologist in you, was the slow start just weather, or did the hatch have something to do with it?

We got hot here on LSC and had a couple of sizeable hatches this week, last night being a big one. Fishing slowed a bit this past week, but a couple of pike this morning. Don't know if the "fishflies" had anything to do with it, but I'd reckon it had to do more with the sudden onslaught of 90* all week.

I imagine a big mayfly hatch can affect the feeding habits of an entire lake. When all those perch and smallmouth are feeding on mayflies, not only are they easy targets for anglers, but also for bigger fishes.

That's one thing that I used to notice when I first started fishing in Vilas County during the 70's and 80's. I primarily fished walleyes, and during mayfly hatches we picked up lots of suspended walleyes casting cranks in the afternoons and evenings, and at the same time we had quite a few walleyes chased and grabbed by muskies. Later on when I started targetting muskies more, I always tried to look for perch and walleyes that were targetting the nymphs swimming toward the surface and fished muskies right through and above the feeding fish. I never got on a solid pattern of success, but always thought that it was worth exploring, just like fishing around schools of ciscoes in the fall. It makes sense that feeding walleye and perch that are picking off suspended nymphs would make very susceptable targets for muskies cruising right under them.
It's worth a shot if you can find them on your electronics. Waves of nymphs wiggling to the surface show up very well on todays electronics.

It was strange fishing , I've fished this lake for 7 years and never been there for the Mayfly hatch before ( they are at least 2 weeks behind a normal season), everything ( fish) moved deep, I was expecting to fish an early summer pattern, but. Talking to the camp owner water temps had been all over the place since the spawn/turnover. We found the fish Tuesday, suspended 20+ feet down over 40 feet of water, (a fall pattern at best on this lake), and raised a nice fish by accident while reeling up. Wednesday the "hook" echoes on the locator thinned out, so we started fishing the edges and tops of reefs and a small trickle of fish started to appear. Thursday, the water clarity started to return close to normal and fishing definitly picked up (130.5" of muskie in 3 fish boated). Early in the week the water was very discolored, wind, rain, cold fronts ( 63 deg air temp, for a high 3 days), and the hatch. Had to laugh, the camp owners sent around a survey on how to improve the camp, my Dad sent back a reply.......Better weather!
