I have a MI 8'6" 2-10 oz rod that is great for double tens and really launches mag dawgs.

Okuma 8'6" XH has served me very well. Lifetime warrantee and just over $100. Collapses down to under 7'6 to fit in my rod locker.

First Choice the St Croix Legend Tournament TM86XHF. Second is the Okuma. I have both. I fished (only breifly) the St Croix, and wish that it was three inches shorter, and had just a little less tip.

Hands down the Lamigalss 8'6" X-Heavy or the new 9' glass/graphite composite X-Heavy. The Lamigalss rods have a lot more "tip" in them than most other rods. They really load up well and toss the lures mentioned, as well as smaller stuff very well. I am amazed at the distance I have gained in tossing just my regular cranks with these rods . The best part about the rods are they flex enough to keep a good bend in the rod during a fight, yet are strong enough and have a good enough backbone for tossing larger lures. Now days the longer, heavier rods seem to be broomsticks, and that makes it difficult to fight fish with.

I tried using the 2 piece Diamondback 8'6" and hate it for Cowgirls. However, it is a pretty good rod for topwater baits. I have gone back to my MH 8' Diamondback and it is ok but I am still looking for a better rod.

I just got a 8'6" XH Okuma; I really like it. The moderate action at the tip really helps to load the rod and cast heavier baits. I've been throwing an 8 ounce SuperD easily, and no problems with DCGs. The flex in the tip means you don't get as much snap if you're jerking the lure, but I'm happy to make that trade off.

I like the Okuma much better than the Tica 8'6" XH, but both are good. I really like telescoping handles on long rods!

The best rod would be a Custom 8'6 Frank Rod in my opinion, but for less than half the $ you can get the 8'6 XH Okuma, and be really happy. It throws big stuff really well, and handles the thump of XX's. And it come with a lifetime warranty. Tough to beat that rod. I liked mine so much I bought the 8'6 Heavy too, it throws pretty much everything else very nicely. The only other rods I use are a Lamiglass jerkbait rod, and I have a custom 7'6 for weagles. Other than that I throw everything else with my Okuma's

Honestly I see this as two pretty different applications, and I don't think the best rod for one is the the best for the other. Double 10's aren't all that hard to throw, a MH diamondback works just fine, and a H DB is borderline too stiff. Then again I use a H DB for big plastics and most people would consider it too light for that so what do I know.

I don't know -- I like a fast action rod for figure 8'ing cowgirls, but for casting something heavy like a big rubber bait they just don't flex enough for my tastes. There might be a happy medium in there somewhere but I haven't found one.

I've thrown 10s and mag dawgs on Fig Rig 76 MH & 8 heavy, MI super magnum 86, The Hammer 86 (by Jason Hammernick) and St. Croix 86 XH. The best rod of those was the Hammer. This thing is a dream for mag dawgs. The fast tip just rockets them and makes ripping and getting funky easy. I also threw pounders on the rod and I liked that too. I did have a handle extension installed that did break. Not the rods fault. I threw pounders on the Hammer, the MI and the Croix. I like the Croix the best even though it is only rated to 10oz. I have found as others have said that a soft, fast tip really is what makes casting pounders the easiest. Although you could really power drive a pounder with the MI even into a stiff wind, it was just too heavy and too much body work for me. Fighting fish also was poor. You can't cast as far with a "softer" rod, but the actual casting is easier. My buddy prefers the MI Monster Magnum (rated to 40oz).

As said you would be hard pressed to find a rod that does both great. You can find a rod that does both, but the performance will be mediocre for each. Of the ones I mentioned I would go with the Croix if I had to for both.

Anyone who's interested in the 8'6" Ledgend Tournament rod check the swap board as I have a brand new one that I need to move.

Great for throwing everything up to pounders, but I can't see having two at the present time.
