I bought myself a new 7001 and have been having problems getting it too cast. are these reel designed too cast a mile like the other abu's? Or are they not?

What are you casting? Are you not getting distance or are you getting backlashes?

I am castingg cowgirls and other bucktails. I am not getting any distance,maybe 10 yards. I have read the instruction manual on how too set the thing to the lure you use and it still wont cast. I am using 80lb stealth if that matters.

Something's wrong. Try backing off the spool tension knob to see if the spool will spin to start with.

Just had a quick look at mine. The silver knob on the handle side should be done up tight, the one on the palming side is the adjuster. Make sure it's not too tight. If you adjust it so that, with the reel in freespool, there's just a tiny amount of side to side movement on the spool, or just at the point when you can't detect any side to side movement it should cast well. If it doesn't there's another problem.

I noticed with mine that it doesn't cast quite as far as other Abu reels and I attributed that to the fact that it had bushings instead of bearings. It does operate much better if the bushings are oiled adequately. I put five or six drops of oil on the bushings periodically whereas the bearings only get one or two on my other reels. I have to say, though, that I never was limited to ten yards. Overall, it's been a good reel for me so far.

Good Luck.

as with any casting reel, a good rule to follow is this;

For each particular lure you put on, reel up until the lure is a few inches away from the tip guide. Keep your thumb on the spool and then hit the freespool button/lever. The lure should drop down in a controlled way. Start off by tighteneing the silver nob on the right hand side so the lure won't move much when you hit free spool. Then adjust by loosening it. If it drops too fast you will be subject to backlashes. Once you get "dialed"in, it will be easier to tighten or loosen for the next lure, depending on its weight relative to the lure you were just casting.

Hope this made sense.

My 7001 just came back from Spirit Lake for service. Like other Abus, it's easy to overtighten the screws on the casing. The one closest to the button was too tight on mine. You can use White-out on the threads to keep them in place so they don't back out and watch half your reel fall in the lake.

i have that reel and it seems to fit best in heavy bait applications. i dont use DBLCG's on that rod or bucktails of any sort for that matter. Bulldawgs, weagle, and Manta's and other heavy baits seem to cast great. in fact ii can cast thr furthest with that reel. but also check your tension knob, loosen it up a bit and that should help.

You can also take off the handle side of the reel and check to see how many of the 4 centrifugal brakes are free to work. On my big reels I prefer to have them all shut off but some people prefer to have one or two of them on.

You problems sounds like either to much spool tension or possible to much line on the spool so that the line is rubbing on the frame.
