Anyone have an opinion on how long it takes a fish to throw a bait after breaking line? I lost a monster fish the other night trolling due to a locked up drag, Couldn't pull back on the spool to get the free-spool going fast enough. Something had to give and it was my line. There was a way upper 40's maybe 50" fish jumping and thrashing wildly trying to throw a orange Triple D. I heard word a guy found a 50+" fish with a cowgirl hooked in the upper and lower jaw last week, how frequently does that happen?

depends on how good you have it hooked. if you try to blast the side of their face off with your hook set then the bait may not come loose. if you were trolling, noone really knows how good the fish was hooked. could have been the tail hook or three deep t-boned. all i can recommend is paying extra attention to your gear. its worth spending the extra two to three hundred bucks to get a personal best fish. always keep your rod and reel in great working order. make sure your line isnt frayed at all. get good at a quality knot you are confident in tieing. use quality tackle (leader, hooks, split rings). i am sorry to hear you lost a good fish. i am sure it happens all the time though (breaking off on a fish). mostly by none musky anglers

Are you looking for minutes, hours, or days for this????? It is a known fact it takes a certain amount of time (which is a trade secret) for the muskie to throw the bait. If the fish is hooked lightly, it will wait till that time arrives prior to throwing it. If it is hooked well, it takes a bit longer to do. It the fish deviates from the "set" allowed amount of time, it is not a true muskie in the eyes of its fellow lunges.

I hope this helps.

I would never have a drag near tight enough to lock up when trolling. I think there can be a setting that is too loose on a drag with a super line but...I haven't found it yet.

What pound line did you have on? Just curious.

I set my drag for the weight of the lure such that if you give the rod a good hard pull through the water after your line is out the force of the lure will pull the drag off the real. Have never had a problem with hooking fish this way or snapping line.

Otherwise if you lose a fish on a good sized floating lure, stick around and wait for the fish to surface. I have netted broken off fish on 2 occasions by doing so. The first one took three tries because it kept submerging everytime I got near with the boat. Just throw the net over the fish as soon as you get close, hooking the lure on the net and letting the fish get away clean is a happier ending than missing imho.

Think about it, the fish just fought hard till it broke off and then still fought with only the hook in it until it was too tired to fight. They float up on a good sized floating lure.

I should have clearly stated I had my drag set grossly loose as you need to do trolling. What happened was the line got to the edge of the spool and dug down into itself and the line wouldn't budge, once the line snapped and the pressure was off, the drag worked fine and the line pulled out as it should have. I was using 80 pound power pro, I have yet to have a problem with this line and think it may have gotten nicked or something cause that shouldn't happen. I would have thought the rod or the hooks would have given in before the line. The bait was cross-ways in the mouth, so I am assuming there were multiple hooks in her. I use all garcia 6500 and 7000 reels spooled tightly @ Rollie and Helens on the machine with Power pro. Maybe I should switch to Calacutta's
