I know this was covered before, and I did a search but couldn't find it.

I have a 12V system and carry two batteries in the boat with me. I want to hook them up to run parallel. Is it a matter of simply hooking the two positives together and the two negatives together and leave in the connections from the trolling motor hooked to one battery? HELP!!!!!!

Hi Brett,

I beleive the way you described the two pos "+" connected and the two neg "-" is called in series. Parallel would be one battery pos to neg and vic versa. Then you attach the unused pos on the one battery to the pos on you trolling motor and the unused neg on the other battery to the neg lead. That would give you 24 volts system. In series would maintain a 12volt system just more running time. Too make sure check minn kota or any other trolling motor manufactuer for a diagram.

Hope this helped,

Manta, you were right. Parallel is hooking the + to the + and the - to the -. Parallel maintains 12 volts while series gives 24 volts (or 36 with 3 batteries). If I did it I think I would just hook everything to one battery, and run only the two jumpers to the other battery.

Since you have essentially created one big battery, you could probably hook one positive to one battery and one negative to the other battery (from your trolling motor, etc), and it should work I think. Seems less confusing to hook everything to the same battery though.

This link has diagrams of parallel and series batteries.

For the parallel batteries they show hooking up one lead to the positive of one battery and one to the negative of the other battery. I still don't think it matters though...? Somebody can correct me on that part if I'm wrong.

yup,

look at the diagrams. hunter4 hasnt been in school for a while (just kidding), two 12VDC batteries in parallel would give you a 12VDC system with additive currents. series would be what hunter4 desribed as "parallel" but dont get confused. + from one battery to - of another will give you series. series is additive voltage and the current is the same.

Here is a link to a discussion about this a few months ago. There are some good diagrams on how to hook up your batteries. I used diagram #4 for my boat.
