Location: Grinnell, Iowa | While walking in my boys room last night (which is always a mess), I stepped on a pile of blankets and felt a lump underneath the balled up mess. It is not unusual to step on toys while walking through his room so usually I don't give it much thought; I just say a few choice words and go on about my business. But this time there was something different. When I stepped on the "toy", it made a distinct light rattle. Knowing that none of my sons toys rattle, the rattling sound really got my attention. Wanting to know what it was I stepped on, I picked up the heap of blankets to investigate. What I found tangled up in the middle of that ball was one of my 8" Believers that he had snuck into his room to play with and had gotten it tangled in his blankets. Like most of you, I don't leave baits just lying around; I keep them put up. But with kids, where there's a will, there's a way (the little knuckle head can climb like a monkey). I stepped right on this thing bare footed. I was lucky that I didn't get all three hooks in my foot. We were also VERY lucky that my boy didn't get the hooks in him or one of my girls. I did a good job of not getting mad at him (I'm sure things would have been different had I actually got hooks in me), I just reminded him how important it is not to play with dads baits and how dangerous they are.
Just remember, when you show your fascination for something around kids, they are going to fascinated and curious as well.
My boy and I are lucky his mom didn't find it because we both would have had our BUTTS KICKED!

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Close call, but on the flip side his fascination with the lure just might mean you have a future Muskie fishing partner there. I took hooks of a couple lures when my boys were little, and they were well used 'toys' for a couple years. |

Location: Slippery Rock, PA | Wow, close call. I put a 3/0 treble in my heel by stepping on it. Not fun digging that one out. Only plus side was that it didn't hurt as bad as it looked. |

| i see positive things outa that one. my grankids and friends kids use the pool with hookless baits. its amusing to see them play fishies for hours. . ya gotta love it |

| My buddy uses a big styrofoam cooler for his tackle box. One day his rotweiler stuck its head down into the cooler and came up with a BUNCH of lures hanging. He shook his head to throw them off. Took a half dozen volunteer fire department guys, and a couple hours, to help him take out the hooks. |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | My little 2 year old monkey used to do the same thing. I pricked his finger with the hook (no blood involved) and said "ouuuiiiieeee". Now he walks around pointing at all the "ouuiieeees" around the house. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i remember "teaching" my kids ... i bought a bunch of baits and gave them each their own boxes ... all the baits were in the packages and had gamakatsu hooks ... their job was to open the packages and put their baits away. the respect started there (they were really young) and i've never had a problem since. "real" consequences are the best way to teach kids. |

Location: Grinnell, Iowa | Let me see, facing a rotweiller with musky baits stuck in his snout or facing my wife with a musky bait stuck in my boy.
I think I'll take the rotweiller.
Interesting and entertaining responses. My boy is 7 and has been told or educated about the dangers of dad's baits. But sometimes his curiousity gets the best of him and he just "HAS TO HAVE ONE". I'm not sure where he gets that trait from. |

That knuckle head boy of mine
