| I had this really agressive fish following a hellhound this weekend and when I went into a figure 8 I realized that I didn't know what to do. I didn't know if I should pull it straight or try and give it jerks during the 8. He followed it back 3 different times and followed for about a half of the loop and then disapeared. So my question is what do you do in a situation like this? And how about dive and rise type jerkbaits?

Location: Burlington, WI | Move your rod back and forth perpendicular to the direction of your figure 8 in order to continue giving the bait the side to side action. Some glide baits will kick out some on their own, but others won't (manta, hellhound). |

Location: Ontario | With the tail tab bent on a Suick, Bobbie or Big Daddy (Suick tail is different to bend than the other two) they will wobble through your figure 8 really nice, this is good for trolling too. Any kind of sweep or extra long pull on the way back to the boat you can get them to wobble almost like a crankbait. Hope this helps, I can't say much about gliders, I don't fish with them much, but lots of guys here do. |

Location: Madtown, WI | Hell hounds have pretty good wobble when you just pull them. You can do a little jerking but I like to just pull them like a bucktail...and add speed and depth change just like a tail. Does work sometimes!!

as far as a figure 8 with them...you can't go wrong with figure 8'ing them just like you would a bucktail as they have a natural side to side action when straight retrieved and this works on the 8 just as well...best bet is get them to eat before they get to the boat...

What's the best trick to get them to eat?...Speed up? Slow down?
This fish was so close that afterward I thought if I would have slowed down he would have ran right into my bait. |

Location: Rhinelander. | I see where someone replied about figure 8s with a suick as a glidebait. I don't consider a suick a glide bait but rather a jerk bait. Same with the reefhawg. To me and some of of the others I have talked to a glider should glide on its own some somedistanec after you start it. Those other baits stop as soon as you stop working them.. I just do a figure with the gliders and jerks as I would any bait. I probably only catch a few muskies a year on the eight and I do it after every cast.

| I took 2 on a figure 8 with a Hellhound last year,and sitting here I'm not a 100 % sure how I do it. I know I drop the pole in the water,keep the lure down,and go into my 8 without any difficulties. Sometimes when you use a lure so much,you don't even think about what you do. I'll let you know in detail a month from now,when I get back. |

| A little trick with the HH for followers...
I don't even fig8 em. Walk it in a usual and when about 5 feet from the boat pause the bait. As the HH drops, it has a slight shimmy in the way down. Sometimes they'll take it on the drop. If they don't, give it a quick upwards pop of the rod tip and the bait will dart upwards and glide out, then pause & flutter again. If that doesn't work, come back and get her later.

| I'll normally use the rod tip and continue imparting a zig-zag action.
One thing to note is not all gliders have the ability to glide while being pulled straight through the water. Magic Makers and Phantoms work well this way, Mantas not so much, and Hellhounds take more speed to get the glide going. Food for thought as not all gliders are built/act the same way. |
