Subject: leader wire vs. lure wire

maybe im just being dumb here and not realizing something but what is the difference between leader wire and lure making wire? if i got some really heavy leader wire with a diameter of say .041 couldnt i use it to make pike size bucktails? or is there something im missing here. the reason i ask is because i want to get wire for making a few smaller bucktails but i dont need the 200-some feet that come in a big coil of lure wire. thanks

It is usually the same wire as long as they both are solid wire, but the pieces (lure making wire) is straightened while being cut into lengths, so it has very little bend. If you buy a coil, although it is pre-straightened, you will almost never have a perfectly straight bait after cutting a piece off and the longer the bait, the worse it is.

If the leader wire is stranded, then their is a huge difference as it will be comprised of many smaller strands and will be flexible and you will have to use crimps instead of just bending the solid lure wire to form the bait.
