Anyone here ever use a Honda outboard? I'm looking at this one boat that has one and I want to know what you guys think of them. Thanks!

I had two--a 130 and then a 200. They are FANTASTIC engines. Go to The Hull Truth forum and do a search in the forum archives...

http://www.thehulltruth.com

...you won't find many bad things about them, as the general consensus is that they are bullet-proof. I saw stories on that site of commercial operators with 5000+ hours on them (one even closer to 10000 hours, as I recall!) without significant problems. And the US Coast Guard pretty much buys Honda engines on most of their smaller rigs.

Having said that, I can tell you that they are a bit tubby out of the hole, and don't have the snot of the Verado. The 200 horse unit I had was on an Alumacraft Tournament Pro 185, and it was the max horsepower for the hull--so it did fine, but that's a tank of a hull so it didn't jump onto plane or anything. But the thing ran like a swiss watch, and I hated to sell it. But I was moving to Florida at the time, and it didn't make sense to take an aluminum boat to a salt water environment.

I bought a Tyee 1850 with a Verado last year, only because the rig was already on the dealer's lot and came as a package. I really like the Verado a lot, and it seems to be an incredible engine--but if I would have my choice at the time I would have gotten a Honda.

I am happy with the Verado, but you shouldn't be at all concerned about the Honda in my opinion--as long as it has been properly cared for. But most service shops told me that they simply don't see many problems with Hondas. But go to that site I referenced and check it out. There are over 10000 users on that board, and you can literally spend hours & hours & hours researching stuff in their archives.

I run a 75 hp Honda tiller and love it. Like Tom said it isnt going ot win any holeshots, although it isnt slow out of the hole either. Runs like a top. The one, and probably only drawback you'll hear out of people is they tend to be a bit heavier than comparable motors.
Of course I'm somewhat partial to Honda. I run Honda atv's, lawnmower, weed whip & attachments and generator. All run GREAT!

I run a honda 50 tiller. Love it. Not one problem, starts and runs like a champ. Runs quietly. I also fish walleye, and this past opener I backtrolled for 8 hours non stop and used less than 5 gallons of gas. Maintenance is easy and convienent each season. Only downfall I have found so far is that I have to search for an oil filter because it is not at our local dealers.

Actually, for the big engines I think the Verado has now eclipsed the Honda four-stroke for heaviest engine in a given horsepower. I am not sure about the lower horsepower models (which might still be the heaviest out there), but with the exception of the new 200 L-4 (4 cylinder), the 200+ horse Verado 6-cylinder engines weigh well over 600 pounds. The 200/225 Hondas still come in at 599 pounds for the 25-inch shaft models, according to the Honda website. The same shaft-length Verados are 635 pounds, per the Mercury website.

I just don't think a guy can go wrong with a Honda engine, provided you know what you're getting going into a used engine. I would have absolutely no hesitation for a new one though.

starting my third season with a honda 90hp. no complaints, starts quick and runs smooth and quiet. use mine for trolling alot, can get under two mph with a trolling plate. I thought the honda 90 was within 20lbs of the merc when I bought. dealer said the hondas return/trouble rate is lower than any other motor they've sold. at the end of each season, run some stabil or seafoam thru the system and then drain each carb free of gas, recommended in owners manual and very easy to do. would not hesitate to own another one.

Just curious as I am looking at buying a used Tuffy 1700 Osprey. Early 2000 model. It has a 50hp Honda on it. Will these motors perform well enough or would a guy always wish he had maxed it out with a 60HP? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

If the price is reasonable and the rig has been well-maintained, I say go for it. I wouldn't worry about the extra 10 horsepower. Buy the boat and go fishing!

I run a 50 h.p on a lund Pro-V rated at 60 h.p. Honestly, the 10 extra horse or even a fuel injected 50 would be much better. It works and will continue to work, especially with the soaring gas prices!!!

I have had a Honda 90 tiller for about 5 years it's a 2000 year model. I had to put a water pump in it last year but other then that NO problems.
