Location: oswego, il | I have seen two different reports on the hook and line harvest estimates for last year in the state of wisconsin and wondering which one is correct. They vary drastically, one has it at 12,493 and the other around 500. They seem pretty far apart. I was just curious if there was a link or any info on it. |

Location: Green Bay, WI | I have seen this discrepancy as well, but have no answer. I thought the higher number included pike along with muskies (i.e.; all Esocids), but am not sure about this. I think you could call or email Tim Simonson for an explanation though. Here's his contact info:

Location: The desert | I'd venture to guess that it is closer to the 12,493 number. 500 seems way too low for total harvest over the course of the year. Tom may be correct that the 12,493 may be all esocids, but even that seems too low for a full season, at least in my head, but I could be way off. |

Location: Rhinelander, WI | They did not survey every fisherman in the State. I think they extrapolated the data they received into the larger number. Maybe the 500 was the actual harvest from the people actually surveyed. But then it seems pretty high. Tim would be the guy to get the answer from.

| In terms of Pike, some lakes could yield 500 pike themselves over the course of a year, and I am sure some do, average, 19" or so.
LCO offered up what? 2800 or so?

A few pages down the DNR Report tries to explain the vast discrepancy in the mail in survey....the number around 12,500.
My belief is 12,500 is way to high but I also believe 500 might be a little low. Some where in the middle is the actual number.
What ever the correct number I would support a purchased "musky stamp" valid for one fish per season. My thinking is this will alow the tourist to purchase the stamp and keep their one fish, if they desire on their WI weeks vacation. Your average/die hard musky fisherman could still purchase a stamp for the unforuntate times a musky is un-releasable because of injury. All funds from the stamp go for musky research/stocking program.
Should be a workable system for all. Who really needs to keep more than one musky a year anyway? |

| 12.500 seems pretty doable to me when one considers the number of waters with northern pike in them and the number of northerns in those waters, and they do get harvested pretty freely from what I have viewed, and did myself in the past.
700 bodies of water which yield 20 harvested northerns each, not hard to believe from my perspective, yields a harvest of 14,000.
12.500 could very well be on the low end when I think about it this way.  |
