Just picked up a used boat with a merc 125. It 's the one that drops from 4to2 when below 2000 or so r.p.m. Any thoughts or pointers on this motor. The previous owner ran merc oil. Should i continue to run that or switch to injex or amsoil. I was told with amsoil it won't smoke as bad.

TCW 3 premium oil, any good brand, don't mix 'em.

My dad ran amsoil in his. My dad's motor smoked below the rpm when it ran on two cylinders. A buddy of mine has a 115, same motor and no smoke. he told me the oil injection is setup for a breakin process and after that period the motor has to be taken in to have a non-breakin injection setting. I know my dad did not do that, I wonder how many of those motors need adjusted. Good solid motor, merc made it for a long time.

I have a 1999 Merc 125 2+2 and I have found when you trim the motor up to go shallow or onto the trailer, the gas drains out of the bowl and I have to go back and pump the ball up before starting the motor again. I was told this was a common problem with this motor. Has anyone else had this problem ? Do they make a kit to to prevent this from happening? It is only a problem if I have the motor trimmed up and then turn the motor off. Have to do this when fishing the rocks on LOTW.

I have a 2003 in this model and have not had any problems (hopefuly stays this way). I run the Merc. oil in it. I started with it and just decided to stay with it. I was told I could use the Evinrude oil but opted not too. Great motor once you are use to starting it. Goodluck fishing

My guess is because this is a carbed motor, you'll need some choke on the first start of the day. Let her warm up, and she'll start great without it the rest of the day. Ambient temp considered, of course.

I generallt use the choke and about 1/2 throttle and starts up like a champ. Even after it has been running for a while, I still have to do it. Once you figure out ths position things need to be in it is a piece of cake.
