Does anybody troll diffrently for tiger muskies then purestrain muskies I normally run shortlines with wileys, tuff shads and muskellunch baits. I was just going to run bright colors on my local tiger only lake . Any tips for tigers ?

I also troll for tigers.Baby Depth raiders(hot Perch) and Large Husky Jerks (firetiger). I do well trolling after a long hot period of hot weather when a cold front comes through. Tigers are alot of fun. I'm glad only a few people fish from them in the metro.

I don't very often get a chance to troll for purestrains but I pay fairly close attention to the threads w/ tips, etc. It seems that those trolling for primarily pures have much better luck on shortlines than I ever have trolling for tigers. Depending on the depth I want to run, my line on the inside rods is often as far as 50-65 feet out. I think tigers may be a bit more boat-shy than their purestrain counterparts. I get the majority of my fish on outside planer boards also. A DDD would be considered a huge lure for me to troll, usually nothing bigger than a baby depth raider (admittedly, that may be just as likely to be a product of the lake as a product of trolling for tigers). Colors? use what you have confidence in.

Ferd,
Alot may depend on clarity and bait concentrations. I have had alot of success trolling a very clear lake for tigers using large rapalas (natural colors) trolled slowly between 75 and 125 feet back. Out of curiousity, what lake or region are you planning to fish?

I'll be fishing Findley Lake in Chautauqua county NY . I have had very limited success there and want to try to hook up a little more. it's the closest "musky Lake " to me and with gas prices the way they are I'm going to try fishing it more often.

Based on you usually shortlining wileys and tuff shads, I figured you normally fished chautauqua. I'll have to hit you up for info/advice prior to the opener this year since we'll be headed your way for it. I fish out here on Otisco (tigers only)alot and have had success this year with rapalas trolled slowly with alot of line out and more recently with bright spinner baits shortlined over flats were weed growth no longer allows the stick/crank baits.

The main difference to what you're used to is probably speed. I prefer to slow it down for these guys whereas I'm guessing your used to running your baits at higher speeds.

Hitchcos- you'll have to let us know how you do on Chautauqua. I was thinking about heading there for the opener but couldn't convince my sister that this is more important than her wedding! LOL Your thoughts on that water would be great, since I'm thinking possibly Waneta instead when I make it out a week or two later (I WILL get to both eventually).

BTW- with all the talk of trolling fast vs slow, and me being a relative newbie to trolling for Esox, I want to be sure that I'm not waay of base. I think of ~1mph as slow and ~3-5 as fast. but based on comments here, that doesn't sound right, so I'm curious as to how everyone here defines it.

Also, If anyone in W/CNY wants to share trolling tips and techniques for my setup, LMK. I'll bring the boat and the beer, you just bring your superior skills...

Nitro, I know how it goes with weddings and priorities...last year's chautauqua tourney fell on my first wedding anniversary. Since I am still alive to write this, I obviously stayed home. I'll let you know how we make out. I am also interested in Waneta. From what I've heard, it gets alot less pressure and has pretty decent numbers, but I've never been out on it.

I think your numbers are pretty much right on, but I know alot of guys will troll alot faster.

hey Hitch-

I've heard the same about Waneta. I have a good buddy with a place there and he'll often cast off the dock for bass and talks about the many times he'll get a massive hit and the reel starts screamin' (but no leader). He said that over the past few years the muskies have been pent up under the docks because the state had used a herbicide to eradicate the weeds. said people were shooting fish in a barrel and the muskies were doing the same on the baitfish. have to be getting big by now-hope they practice C+R.

thanks for the 411 on trolling. that makes sense. I saw a couple guys that had to be cruising at 10+mph a few weeks ago on Consesus for either pike or tigers. i'm going to try speeding it up a bit. just picked up a smartcraft tach, so I can really dial it in now with the troll control.

drop a line if you're ever heading west and need a 2nd in the boat...
