| it may be the clutch arm plate. try spinning the handle quickly, and then stop it abruptly. if there is a fast clicking sound, and the spool still spins. the arm plate is probably the culprit. i don't think it's the worm gear, but that's a very common problem as well.
check out mike's reel repair for part availability and schematics. the ambassaduer series reels are straight forward to work on, so i'm sure it won't be a problem for you. however, there's no shame in sending it off.

if you send them off, think about upgrading the bearings and drag system. i've heard it makes alot of differance in the 5500-6500 reels. just a thought |

| SPinning the handle quickly and stopping the handle will result in the loud clicking noise on all Abu reels, this is a safety measure to keep the pinion gear from being damaged.
It may be the clutch arm which can wear out particularily if you engage the reel while the bait is still in the air. Another culprit might be the position holder or clutch return spring. Depending on how old the reel is there still be older parts in the reel. You will want to replace the position holder and return spring with the newer stainless clutch arm and position holder with the return spring encased in a plastic "cup". |

Location: Chicago | I would send it to mikes reel repair, he know's what he is doing he also has a bunch of hop up parts too. Call before sending though, just to get a time frame ( shipping can be a little slow at times). I have recently bought a bunch of stuff from Mike's for a bunch of different reels including an Abu SSC3. Hope this helps (http://www.mikesreelrepair.com) |

| Mike's does a good job but personally I would not care to send a reel to Canada for repair that might take weeks to clear Customs, etc. I would send it to Sportsman's Repair Shop or right into the factory repair center in Iowa. |

| If the A/R bearing was bad the handle would spin backwards when the line went out. |

That used to be the case but last year I sent in my 2 year old reel for repair and within a week I received a $30 bill that stated if not paid in a certain amount of time the reel will be sold or used as a return (something like that). The fact he got it used on ebay means he might not get the ol' free rebuild that most of us are used to. But it's still pretty good service like you said, other than the nasty-gram that comes with the bill. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Sounds like the line is not anchored to the spool. Put your thumb on the spool lip, not the line, and pull. If the line comes off it just needs to be respooled with better mono backing. |
