Subject: How to build a musky pond???

My father is interested in constructing a small pond that would be able to support muskies. Does anybody know where we can find information, or who has done it. Any of you guys have suggestions such as size, depth, forage, water conditioning etc? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Tom

Plunker

For Fishing or for raising??? If its for raising you must be able to drain it or take the water down when you want,,once a year etc,,,otherwise no matter how hard you try other species will get in Bullheads etc and they will reproduce and eventually eat the young,,,trust me we have had this problem with our muskies inc ponds

If the pond is for raising muskies these items are important:
1)uninterruptable quality water source, a steady flow is better than standing water;
2) a water depth of 6' when the pond is full, with a bottom more or less flat to ease netting operations. The ability to adjust the sustained water level is also good;
3) a fast tappering sides to reduce the shorebird's ability to feed on the baby muskies;
4) allow enough space to walk the edge of the pond when netting, with a more gradual taper to the bottom at the end where the fish would be removed;
5)cut back trees and overhanging brush to take away platforms for kingfishers to perch;
6) fence around the pond to attempt to stop turtes and otters from getting into the pond. Have a gate so that minnow trucks, a boat trailer for netting operations, and a truck to transport the muskies for stocking can get some access to the area;
7)Be aware of localized flood stages of near by waters so that your pond doesn't get swallowed up by eccessive storm runoff or run over by flooding lakes
I'm sure that there are a million other issues that you should be aware of but this should get you thinking about the basics. Contact your Dept. Of Natural Resources for their input.
Good Luck.

The pond would just be for raising/fun. I think it would take quite a bit of money to make one big enough for fishing.
