I just took my rod out to a local lake to try out some of the baits i bought over the weekend, and I noticed two small cracks in the eyelet of the rod tip. Every 6 or so casts, either when I was throwing or reeling in, the line pooped out of the eyelet and it was only coming out of the second to last eyelet from the end. So, naturally, I popped the line back through the crack so I could make more casts. i noticed abrasions on the line. That equals bad is a fish grabs on. I was wondering if anyone out there has ever had the same problem and if there is a real temporary fix for it until I take it into Gander Mountain. I am heading to Pewaukee this weekend and the Gander on the way doesn't open until 9. SO any help would be great. Thanks guys!

do not use that rod anymore when fishing!
the cracks in the guide that are fraying your line will cut it, especially if there's any tension on the line such as from a fish.
you'll lose lures and could definitely leave one in the mouth of a fish.

if you've got a local bait shop closer than the Gander, they usually have spare tip tops available for a couple bucks.
take your rod in for comparison to be sure you get the proper size rod tip.
simply use a lighter and heat up the tip top guide, it'll come off easily once the adhesive is warm.
lightly sand the rod tip to rough it up and then clean it off.
put some epoxy on the rod tip and inside your new tip top guide and put it on the end of your rod.
(i've also used gel super glue in a pinch out on the water when i didn't have any epoxy available.)
clean off the excess epoxy that squeezes out onto your rod.
make sure the rod tip is straight before the epoxy starts to set.
i also like to slide some shrink tube onto the rod before putting the tip on and once the tip is in place and the epoxy is setting i slide the tubing up onto the guide base and heat shrink it in place for a little extra hold.

thanks lambeau, advice is appreciated. I would hate to have a break-off and loose a fish, let alone leave a fish swimming around with a lure in its mouth.

Never had a tip wear like that, but I have blown out a few tip inserts. I took Keith's (Professional Edge) advice and I now have all stainless, no insert, tip guides, on all my muskie rods. I can't imagine wearing through the tip, and no insert to worry about.

Mine is all steel too. There is not lining on the eyelet. I think I may have accidentally smacked the rod on the ground or wall or something, because the crack went all the way trough the steel.

This is a no no. NEVER use epoxy or super glue. Why? Because you will permanently adhere the tip top to the top of the rod. What happens if you need to replace that tip top????? You are screwed and have to cut off the end of your rod. Use tip top or fletching glue. It a rubbery stick that you heat up and rub on the tip and place your tip top on to set. If you need to remove the tip top, then simply reheat and it comes off and you place another one on.
