Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Our friends at Spring Bay Resort will be offering weekely reports from Vermilion, home of the 2008 MuskieFIRST Spring Bay resort Outing. Looks like there's plenty of walleye action to be had, so Walleye fillets will be fried in Worrall's cabin!
Weekly Fishing Report
In spite of the late ice-out and the cold, wet weather, our guests experienced
some of the best walleye fishing they've ever had. The big post spawn females
were up in shallow water and "hungry"! Our guests caught (and released) 25 walleyes
over 5 pounds and innumerable walleyes from 3 - 5 pounds. The smaller male(eaters)
were still in deeper water but were feeding and there to be caught.
All in all, it was a great way to start the season!

| i just spoke with Joe from Spring Bay over lunch today.
as of last weekend the muskies were still spawning - in fact two nice sized fish were doing the dance right at the docks in front of their resort. water temps were 60-61 degrees. (this is in the West Arm)
muskie fishing has been typical for the late-/post-spawn period: slow, with lots of follows but few fish eating baits.
one 27" and one 42" muskies caught this week in camp.
the pike fishing in the early season has been good, with great average sizes.
hopefully the rain and cool weather will be replaced by some sun and heat soon!

Muskie opener was a success!! The muskie are still holding tight to their small spawning bays while following lures consistently. There are only a few active muskies presenting themselves. The small mouth are in their pre-spawn yet, which they should be on their beds in the near future. Panfish and crappie were excellent. Walleyes are very slow on the west end right now, and the few that have been caught were worked for. The lindy-rig and a leech seems to be working the best, while trolling Rapalas seems to be working decently. Hopefully the weather will get stable long enough to find some fish. A good place to be looking for walleyes this week would be the reefs. They are in transition from the shallows out to the reefs, so another good place to look would be some flats on the way out to the reefs.

| Was up at Vermillion yesterday. Only fish contacted was an emaciated 40" on an island complex just off shore on the outside of Pike bay. Hardly any weed growth out past 3 feet...talk about a slow start.

Location: Musky Country | Just got back from the V,,, Really slow on the musky's but the Walleye's were cranking. Cold water temps when we got up there as in 55-56 when we left 59-60
not much weed growth yet. The fish we did move were in 10fow on the edges of the north facing Dark water bay's |

Weekly Fishing Report
Muskie fishing has been slow with only 2 being caught, a 32" and a 46". I've seen more and more muskies becoming active as the water temp rises. The last 10 days the weather has been hotter/nicer than normal, which is harder on the walleye day fishing. The lindy and a leech, or the jig and a leech seemed to produce decent fish during the day at depths around 22-30 feet. The walleyes are out on the reefs but are not in full swing. A few walleyes have also been picked up of sharp breaks off of islands, same depths as off the reefs. The walleyes that we were catching, came from the central part of the lake at night. The slip bobber and a leech worked wonders night after night in the mud flats in depths of 9-14 feet. The northerns have been in full swing this month so far, while the bass are just moving on the beds a few days ago. The bass are over 2 weeks behind schedule, but the bite is on now!! | how has crowding been this year??? Im wondering if gas prices have had an impact?? I fished V for many years and went last July and swore "never again" in July,, it was like compeating for parking spots at a football game or concert with everybody cutting in on each other |

You just need to fish mid week and stay off of the "comunity" spots.......
How can a 44,000 acre lake be crowed???? Unless you want to fish the same 20 comunity spots that every other weekend warrior fishes , than you won't do very well.
Go exploring a little, find your own spots (Huge Fish Spots) And there are a lot.
Vermilion is not Burger King where you can have it your way, or McDonalds where everything is instant gratification..... there are some Monster fish in this system and you HAVE TO WORK for them. Period....
Mid week and peak times on the water WILL put some nice fish in front of you, then the rest is up to you...... Also fish the crappy weather because others won't , therfore less preasure will = more oppertunites.
Man, don't give up on such a Great Fishery because of a bad experence, just change your stratagey a bit. Switch your working schedule so you can spend 2-3 days during the week on V ..... I personaly dislike fishing the weekends on V because of the traffic.
Any way just do it and have fun.................

The fishing has been very stable on the west end of the lake over the past 2 weeks. The walleye fishing has been great, while the muskies are still pretty slow. Northerns, bass, and pan fish have been a blast for a lot of our guests. The walleyes have been 50/50 for slot v.s. keepers, while a few trophy fish have been caught. most of the walleyes have been caught from 11-16 feet off the edges of reefs or heavy structure areas. The best producing techniques for the walleyes have been a lindy w/ a leech, slip bobber w/ a leech, and on a few occasions a lindy walleye spinner has out produced your basic lindy. The may flies hatch just appeared the other day, but has not seemed to have a great effect on the fishing. Over the next 2 weeks there are going to be some good reports on the muskie fishing. There is 2 big outings on the west end of the lake. This coming weekend there is a muskie tournament on friday and saturday, and the following week we have 40 muskie fishermen that booked the resort for the whole week. So any active muskies over the next 2 weeks are going to see some lures and there will be some fish caught. Stay Tuned!!! Good luck fishing!!

Well to start off, lets just say the muskie fishing has been turned on. There was a tournament out of both ends of the lake July 18th&19th which produced 29 muskies in 18 hours of fishing by 50 boats. July 19th-26th we had a group of about 35 muskie fishermen stay with us for an outing hosted by the website MuskieFirst. There were 24 muskies caught, with only 4 of them being under 40 inches and the biggest being 51 3/4 inches. The lures of choice seem to be your slow creeper top-water baits, double cowgirls, and small bucktails. During the whole week, most of the muskies were caught burning smaller bucktails over thick weeds and off rock humps. Now, over the past week or so, no muskies have been caught in thick weeds, but off the deep weedline edges and rock humps is where the fish are being caught. The water temp has finally turned to our favor at around the 72-74 degree mark on average, which really helps muskie fishing. I don't have much of a walleye report for the past few weeks because of all the muskie fishing being done. But for the few that have gone out and caught a few, they were using slip bobbers off the reefs and lindy rigging in the flats in 24-32 ft.

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Any of you guys that were able to make the outing or others that are willing to share general tips and clues for the weast end of vermillion. Never been there. Going up on Sep 13. Yes I have booked Steve at Spring Bay but am currently starring at maps for hours on end looking for spots. What are Sept fish on vermillion relating to Weeds, Rocks, trees, points flats breaks too Early for Open Water Bait fish targets???? Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Sorry I couldnt join the earlier outing and cant make the Oct outing ....."This Year" Looking to an 09 date for oct..

| here's the latest report from Spring Bay...
Over the past few weeks, the muskies have been booming. Just people staying at the resort and people I have taken out have caught 15-20 muskies and many big bonus pike. The muskie sizes have ranged from 36" - 51.5" and the northerns ranging from 28" - 42". The lures of choice have been cowgirls or any double 9 or 10 bladed lures, creepers, & top raiders. Speed has been the key, while using the double cowgirls speed it up, while using the creepers keep it slow, and use the top raiders at a medium to fast speed. I have not raised many fish on any walk the dog lures lately. The weeds seem to be out producing the rocks on the west end. As for the walleyes, we have not had many people fishing for them. Sandy bottom at the edge of a weedline has been the top producer with a lindy rig and a crawler. The open water reefs are still producing with a jig and minnow/leech. We have some good fishermen up this week so a prompt feedback will be posted on this coming weeks fishing report. Good luck fishing!!
