| I'm not a Muskie fisherman, but wanted to troll for Rockfish with a swim bait. In the Muskie world, are these baits normally trolled or fished cast and retrieve?
Will a "normal" swim bait (I know there are no standard baits) have good movement at 2-3 mph while trolling?
Thanks for any info. I put my order into to staminainc today for the pieces and parts to make a few.
Thanks,
slingToad

| Every swimbait is different ( I am guessing you are talking about hard swimbaits ) Some run deeper and others shallower..My understanding of rock fish leads me to think deeper trollng 20' ?? Most swimmers in the size I would guess you are wanting to use will most likely run too shallow but I can see running these behind dipseys.........3 mile per should be fine but do your research....These fish like sunfish, Yes ?? Look up Nates Baits and checkmout his panfish swimmer in bluegill pattern, I have one and it runs deeper than most and is VERY impressive in the water..Might be able to run it trolling without a dipsey...Good Luck.........Doug Bradley |

| Doug and tacklebooty,
Yes, I am talking about the hard swim bait. We do troll shallow and deep depending on what batch of fish are in the Ches Bay - Spring, Fall or the Summer "local resident" rockfish. Anywhere from 0-40 feet deep. Never ran a dipsey, but we do use a downrigger or a leader with cigar sinker. This is the saltwater Striper or more commonly known here as the Rockfish.
My plan is to proto a couple of baits. To get them to run deep, I'll probably use a long leader and a heavy weight as required.
Bait >> 15-30’ leader >> weight >> main line.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep you posted with updates. Great discussion. Lots of great work here.
Thanks,

| The downrigger would keep a consistent and accurate depth. I like to run about 7 lines off my small boat and planar boards though. Hopefully these baits will work well. I plan to initially try an all white body and a chartreuse green body. That mimics the bait colors I currently use with bucktails and plastic shad bodies.
Aqua Vu… I don't have one of these, but it looks like a very cool camera. I like the idea of watching the lure's movement and dropping it down to see the fish too.
Post a video if you have one digital.
Thanks,
slingToad.
