Well today is a sad day.... my Laptop was stolen out of my truck ( locked in my driveway) I think they got in through the back window. I had close to 2000 musky pix on it as well as 6000 others. I saved everything up to 06 on it. But i am sick to my stomach. Save all your pictures. The laptop is replaceable....the pix are priceless.

Thieves! That horrible news. Would like to add that it would behoove one to also burn to CD as hard rives fail all the time.

Agreed, I save all my stuff to CD/DVD, label it and back that up with a 500 Gig stand alone HD.

External Hard drives are cheap, go out and buy one.

Here's a nice 2.0 external, about the size of laptop hard drive.

Or
Use
http://www.divshare.com/
You get 5gig of storage for free if you don't need a bunch of space.
Or if you need a bunch of room
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206615082&SearchEngine=Pr...
or
This would be my recommendation if you have the desk space.

I've had a 250gig hooked up to my dvr for the past 2 years and it's run flawless.

Will,
I am sorry to hear of your loss - PC's are used so heavily today that securing the data is a must....
If anyone would like to learn about disaster recovery for a small business (We can do individual laptops, however our lowest package is $120/Year) - I am the sales manager for an Iowa company that provides offsite backup and DR planning. It is a web-based application so you can retrieve your data from any PC with a high speed internet connection. We also give our clients the ability to run in a virtual environment (Your building burns to the ground you are still conducting business in a matter of hours). Your data is overnighted on external harddrive or on new PC or server if desired. All data is replicated between multiple data centers - so loosing a file is virtually impossible - far more secure than any local backup. Hardware failure and human error happen often -unfortunately.

Will, I feel your pain. That sucks. I have thousands of photos on the desk-top at home and on my laptop and I know how much it would hurt to lose it all. Many others have already jumped in with lots of comments, but really the prevention is obvious. Like you, I don't back up my stuff often enough. I set up a monthly reminder in my electronic calendar to get a reminder. The most important part of the prevention isn't really drives, disks, and gadgets - it's the discipline to perform routine back-up that is critical. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story - I'll try to be more diligent before I suffer the same loss. Thanks.

That's freakin terrible. I hope you have an awesome year and somehow turn this negative into a positive. For example, develop each picture and put the picture into an album. Buy the size album according to your average yearly totals, and see if you can fill up the book! Catalog each year, write notes about the catch on the back of the photo. In other words go old-school. OR go new-school and buy one of these Archos hat video cameras, those seem really cool.

I fell for you. Good luck filling the void!

Sorry to hear of the loss; my car was just looted this weekend, so I can relate. Petty crooks, though, they took my MP3 player and my wife's cell phone, but left my fishing gear and the work laptop (thank goodness!). I agree with the suggestions of backing up with an external harddrive, I just wanted to share that all drives are not equal. I bought a Maxtor external drive when I was leaving Grad school to come Ohio way, and it died within a week with all my graduate work on it. Fortunately, I had CD's made as well. Funny thing is that the replacement the company sent did the same thing to my mom a couple months after I gave it to her, losing all her pictures.

I just picked up a Western Digital external HD to store all my stuff on.  Bought 1TB, so I will never run out of space, or if I do, i have taken A LOT of pictures!

I use a couple of websites to host photos. One is free but has a limit to the size of photo you can post and the amount of space available. The other costs me around $50.00 per year and I can post whatever size photos I want there, and however many I want. I have a few photos posted there that are no longer even on my computer. If I ever did want the original size photo back again, I'd have access to it. It's kind of like an external hard drive in a way, and takes up less space on my computer. The one site I use is set up so people can purchase the photos as well. Let me know if you'd like more info. Sorry about your loss.

That sucks Will, your pics were some of the best, and all nice fish too. If it makes you feel any better, I once had a loaded bucktail and spinnerbait box fly out of my boat on the hiway. Somebody got a lot of memories in that find.

Sorry to hear that Will. I can tell you from experience that sucks and I have lost some past client project work that can never be replaced. All you can do is get yourself in the habit of regular backups, weekly or monthly. I hope they catch the scum bags who did it, and maybe hopefully you will have your laptop back at some point soon.
