So I was at Thorn Bros today and saw the BIG screen side scan Hummingbird. Anyone know what would happen if you turned the transducer sideways? Would you not see what structure is coming up in front of your boat? I woudl think that would be very cool Actually I would want two units side by side one shooting in front of the boat and one to the sides. just curious. If you have a "shoot thrugh hull" transducer you could try this by turning it 90 degrees.

James, as I understand the technology. The SI sends a narrow beam, lets say one inch, top to bottom out to the side and records that. You have to be moving forward for it to record more images. Turning it front to back of the boat, you would be seeing the same one inch wide reading so to speak all the time. That is my uderstanding of it. Down on Kinkaid Lake , I was able to see both downed timber and standing timber. Also could see inside pockets of the underwater weed lines. Pretty cool.

That big screen unit was impressive! I would love to go out with someone who has one to see it work. HAte to spend that much on one.

THanks for the reply!

At the Madison Fishing Expo- There was a presentation of the side scan versus underwater camera and actual diver video. The side scan is definitely a step ahead of standard sonar and also a step ahead of video. I have one and wouldn't replace it with either. The only advantage to video is you can identify fish, With side scan you can by far out do video in searching faster or learning a new lake. It's faster and it's much more precise. I can show you spot's that you would have thought were secret, even though you hadn't shown them to me.
