| Looking for lakes to study before an upcoming trip to Hayward. I am staying on Sand Lake but will be traveling the area. I have fished Moose, Winter, Barber, LCO and Sand in the past. Which of these would you recommend? What other lakes might be recommend? Why? I will be watching for posts intensely after the northern opener.

So far our spring has been non-existant. Water temps are behind, weed growth will be behind if this continues, so that is one consideration. On these colder springs I would stay away from the deeper, clear lakes and look to smaller/shallower or darker water. Not saying that nice fish can't be taken on LCO, Round, Grindstone, etc. (heck, I'm sure some walleye fisherman will boat a big one on a 1/4oz. jig like every year!), just that it is very hit or miss and usually requires some special locations and presentations. I would add Namakagon, the Flowage, Bone Lake (Polk Co.), Yellow (Burnett Co.), to your investigative list as well.
If the weather snaps like last year (from 50 degrees to 80) all bets are off by the musky opener, anything could be fair game. [:p] | |

Hayward Area 1st Week of June
