| Winston (big gun) and i made up some bucktails on Saturday afternoon, and went down to the WI River by my house to see how they looked in the water, make sure the blades spin true, etc.
technically, it's illegal to fish for muskies this time of year, but the section of river that flows past my house is not somewhere i'd ever consider fishing for muskies, and we were just making short casts in front of ourselves to see if the lures we made worked properly.
well...you guessed it...a big muskie blows up shore-side on Winston's double-8 bucktail with about a foot of line out. we were both watching the lure so saw the fish come up behind and smoke it, then do a big wallowing turn and about 6-8 headshakes out of the water. all right in front of us, so very very cool. he repeated "oh my God, i've got one" three times while standing there too surprised and dumbfounded to bother setting the hook! (which is actually good, since the season is closed.) she threw the bait and swam away.
it was a big fish, easily 45" with a broad back and fat sides. i guess i'd better start exploring the river by my house...

i managed to get out to a eastern Iowa resoivoir shore fishing. Wouldn't ya know it as soon as I get to the prime spot, smack dab in the middle of yesterday's Major, a couple guys show up proceed to start scuba diving in the exact spot I wanted to fish. Oh well it was a nice day to be out. |

Location: The desert | Sure wish I could have gotten out. Aside from work and working on the Caldron Falls Management Plan, the flows here in Point are the highest I have ever seen them. Sunday the output from one of the dams here in Point was at 43,300 cubic feet per second. Along some roads the water is all the way up to the shoulder. Will be a while before it recedes as well. I'm hoping its down a bit for musky opener. For those interested, my management plan will be complete by tomorrow morning. It will be a large file so I'll have to ask Steve to put it up. Today will be lots of editing, its amazing how some kids make it through school and still write like 4th graders! Drives me nuts!!! |

Location: Eau Claire, WI | Ice is still not over on some lakes up here but it's gone on Lake Eau Claire...pulled in hundreds of perch (biggest was a little over 14"), crappies (up to 12.5"), bluegills (up to 8.5"), pike (up to 25"), walleye (up to 17.5"), and one Muskie (a 33" ripe female) oh ya and a ton of redhorse, shiners, numerous big bullhead, and two huge carp.
Checking fyke nets with the DNR is fun!

Location: Lockport, IL | I fished over at Carroll on Saturday. It was a tough day for muskies. We didn't even see one. We switched over to small crankbaits and pounded the shorelines and picked up 13 White Bass (2 - 16"), a smallmouth (15 1/2", largemouth 12" and an 18" Walleye. Even though we got skunked on Muskie, I felt a little better getting to see video of that monster that they released over there during spring netting. I lost one close to that size over there last season right by the boat.  |

Location: Hayward WI | I was on Lake Wisconsin sunday, fishing for bass, saw a couple of muskies swimmin' side by side, trying to do the spawing thing, pretty cool, first time I've seen that. The female was upper 30" range and fat. Water temps in the main lake were around 50, had temps to 60 in shallow bay areas. |

| i got out muskie fishing last saturday here in nebraska...lots of people out fishing but nobody was catching anything.
the fishing should turn on soon...i hope.

Location: Ogden, Ut | Chuck Nelson and I got out on Sunday for a few hours. Well, we bounced around a lot anyway. It was as windy as I have seen out here and a bit on the chilly side (39-43F). Water temps over most of the reservoir were from 40.5 to 41.1 except in one protected bay where it was 43-44F. We hit that pretty hard but still had no luck. I wanted to get out and show him more of the reservoir, but it just got too miserable each time we tried to escape the bay and move. I have a feeling he'll be back, and I'll do a better job of showing him some better spots and hopefully some fish. |

Had me and my partner in figure 8s at the same time, twice. On 40" fish.

Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI | No muskie reports, but a few undersized walleyes on the river made it an enjoyable weekend. Ice pulling away slowly but surely here in Vilas/Oneida Co's.
Yard work sucks.

| The Wisconsin River was nasty this weekend, so I ended up on the main basin of DuBay this weekend. We caught to many little walleyes to count and brought home four decent walleyes and a couple crappies.
A guy shore fishing near us started freaking out when he was bringing in a walleye and what he thought was a 48-50 inch musky followed. Note to self... fish that spot in a few weeks.

Location: Illinois | Hit Indiana on a club outing. Fish were in full spawn, and every boat we talked to struggled to move fish. The one and only musky caught from our club was a healthy 45 incher caught on..........a crappie minnow!

Location: oswego, il | I am done fishing for pre-spawn muskies. I know I caught some after el-nino in '02. I don't remember if I caught any in 03 and 04 and I know I have not caught one since then. It's not that they don't eat, it's that the lakes I fish are shad based and there is plenty of fresh dead, dying and about to die shad to eat, why chase a bait when you have all you want to eat without chasing? 02 was an exception with less than a month of ice and ne shad die off. Not wasting my time and money. Been catching some bass and a bunch of catfish on crankbaits though on some lakes around my area, about one more weekend of that and I will be tossing musky baits. |

Location: Plover, WI | Went out with Slamr on the Fox Chain, Saturday. Spent the morning trolling all depths with nothing to show. Decided to cast the shallows the last hour of the day. Slamr had a small follow and a few casts later, I stuck a chunky one in the low 30's. It was especially nice for me as I caught the fish on a homemade glider. What a great feeling that is.

| Let me start by saying that I fished the Fox Chain of Lakes on Sunday. The weather was absolutely perfect. It was nice to see the first good fish of the year. A mid-forties female with a lower 30 inch male in tow. My partner and good friend Mark lost a fish about 1:00. I was so glad to be on the water it was a great day. A good friend, a few fish and great spring weather who can complain.

| I poked a slob of a 39" fish on Sunday, on a double Showgirl. Moved two others on 10" weagle/Dbl Show, and not much after that.
I did have a fish hit a grinder as I was slow rolling it. Pretty sure it was a flathead, and a big one at that. Nailed it, ran for a few seconds taking like like there was no sign of it stopping. After I set the hook, I got a head shake or two, and she was gone. If it was a musky (which I'm reasonably certain there aren't any THAT big in this lake) it had to be a PIG of a fish. I'll never know, however, what it was. |
