Hey Guys,

Just wondering your thoughts on some of the bang-for-the-buck reels (i.e. Shimano Cardiff, Shimano Corvalus, Abu Garcia 6500 C3, etc.). What are your preferences?

I used to have a 6500. I currently use 400TE's but I'm thinking of getting a backup reel to use while / if reels are being serviced.

Your thoughts?

Check out the Pflueger 66 series round reel. The Gander Mountain GS 66 (get the silver one with the lower gear ratio) is pretty much the same reel - they are made by Pflueger. I have used the GS 66 reels and I like them quite a bit for around $80! I hear some stores have the GS 66 on clearance for $60. Not sure if that is still going on, or if any are left at that price but it would be worth checking out.

6500 SSC3 from either rollies or thornes. This reel has a thumb bar like your TE and has all the other features of the 6500 C3. The only difference between these two reels is color and thumb bar/push button release. Pair either of these reels up with a power handle and you have one amazing reel.

Was looking at the GS66 in the store the other day and was alerted to a could be minor problem by the sales assoc. When you engage the thumb bar on these reels, it goes down quite a ways. Depending upon your rod and reel seat, it might not be able to go down all the way to fully engage. I threw it on a Gander Guide Series rod and it worked just fine. Just a little something to look out for. But really liked the reel. They were out of the GS66, or I would have bought one. This kid (a college student) was the most knowledgeable sales guy I have met yet in the Gander in St Cloud. Really knew his stuff about musky equipment.

I have a couple of the Pflueger 66 and they are a great reel. Very smooth. I have them on St. Croixs and Guide Series rods and do not have any problems with the thumb bar. Only get a chance to use them a couple of time a year(all day trips throwing everything), but love them. Not a bit of problems. I like the Pfluegers so much I changed my walleye reels.

I like the Abu garcia 6500c4. I have had 0 problems with the 3 I have. As long as you take care of the reel it will take care of you. Its about $80-85 bucks

Another vote for the Pflueger Trion 66/GS66/BPS reel. I've had two Pfluegers and they've been my most reliable reels, and I just got a GS66 this last fall but didn't throw with it yet.

I pick up a lot of $100-$150 reels in the Bargain Cave at Cabelas for about 1/2 price. Good place to look if you are close. They always seem to have a lot of reels. No problems yet with any of my Bargain Abu reels...

The Catfish Connection.com has the Abu Big Game 6500CL for about 100 bucks. I have seen that offer in the past and could not pass it up. Made in Sweden, with a power handle, awesome reel I would recomend. Kdawg

The Guide Series reels are 6 bearings, the Pfluegers are 5 I believe. For $60.00 you can't go wrong with them.

I just picked up a pair of Okuma Induron IDX 400a's on an Ebay retailer, not an auction, for $95 each. Not a better reel under $100 in my opinion. I threw some double tens down in our pond and with the free power handle I was impressed. Very smooth reel. Lots of people on this board have been impressed.
