I just went thru this same ordeal last week.. I dont have any experience with the Folbe's but I have used the scottys. I decided to go with the down east. hopefully it was a good investment

If you go with rail mounts just make sure your rails are raised far enough off the gunwale that you can push the holder all the way back (rod tip up)! Our rails are too low to the gunwale and we cannot do this. Makes running boards in anything other than glass calm conditions a challenge, and I know if I could have reached back and shoved the rod tip into the air we wouldn't have lost nearly as many baits as we have...

Just something to consider.

I absolutely love the Folbes, and am so glad I made the investment. That said, I ran them for a season, and gave them a real good test last fall on several outings. They are built to withstand snags and hits/runs of big fish. Again, as someone who used to run the Down East, I am really glad I made the switch. But, I still like my down East Saltys for temporary use in my small rigs, where a clamp on is desired.

I looked into the folbes and I think I'm going to try them out. However I have a question or 2 that I need an opinion on.
First I have an alumacraft with a 4 inch gunnel. That said should I drill in the big black mounting base? It is kinda of an ugly? I thought about flush but that means I would have to put a 1 inch hole in a 4 inch structural member,so I think that is out.
Option 2 put on the ranger-style rails from cabelas and rail mount the rod holders. It is a cleaner look, but it cost an extra 80 bucks for the rails.

Just looking for an opinion.

This is what the rails would look like with the rods holders.

I jsut ordered 2 folbe rod holders I will let you know what I think.

I also ordered the rails from cabelas. After putting them on my buddies boat I was impressed and think they are a sharp add on.

You can order 75in rails from Ranger for $5-10 cheaper a piece than the "Ranger-Style" rails from Cabelas.

Has anybody used the Folbes holders for pulling dipsy divers? If so what did you think? I need some holders that can do double duty for salmon and muskie and I don't ever completely trust the RAM holders I am currently using although they haven't failed me yet.

Folbe rod holders were designed for Salmon anglers in the NW. If they can withstand the abuse from 70+ lb Pacific Run Salmon, they can withstand anything dished out by any fish here in the midwest.
