| I was out there 2 nights ago, no boats..could have used a jetski to get out to where our shack used to be..found 9 feet of water and a pair of pliers my friend threw after a northern got the best of him a couple months back. Summer weekends when the weather is nice and there is actually water in it you will see quite a few people out there...seems like the numbers grow every year, not matter where you go though. There are a good numbers of big fish in every species the flowage holds when you get into them. Tons of really good fishing areas..also many prop obstacles depending on the water level. Wildlife in general is abundant all around the flowage as well. Overall I'd say it's an excellent fishery with good scenery and with the constantly changing water levels, it never get's old. Then again I haven't lost a prop yet, just a load of jigs and crankbaits:) |

Rhinelander Flowage/Boom Lake is not a flood control flowage. Paper Mill has a mandate that the water level cannot change more than (I believe) 6 inches plus or minus at a gauging station 2 miles up river from the dam located in Rhinelander.
Water quality is generally stained with a tannic color, but it really depends on where you are in the system. The river can be cloudy at times, depending on inflow. The lake is generally clearer, but still has that tannic color. If you head down into the Lake Creek area of the flowage it becomes very dark tannic color, locals refer to Thunder Lake and Lake Creek as “The Darkwater”.
I would classify boat traffic as moderate for Oneida County. Lake sees some skiing and jet skiing activity on warm weekends and holiday weekends, week day traffic is significantly lower than Minocqua are lakes, as it’s mostly a weekend local destination. If it’s a warm sunny weekend the river channel will see lots of traffic from pontoons and pleasure boats running up to the Taverns and sand bars located up in the McNaughten area. So you might want to take that into consideration if the property is right on the main river channel. Again during the week or on cloudy raining days there is almost no traffic.
It’s a very interesting diverse body of water with lot of fish of all species.

| My sister lived on the Rhinelander Flowage for 10 years. The water level only fluctuates about 9". Unlike other flowages (such as Nokomis) - the water level stays consistent, even when we have a drought |
