Subject: Rusty Hook Prevention ?

Hey Guys I have just ordered and Received from Plano, the Black Inserts from their Plano tackle Boxes. you know the ones that hold 25 Lures per side.I ordered enough to carry 125 lures one lure in each compartment and These were modified somewhat Dropped in and tie drilled and wrapped together. I am going to keep all the lures I use occasionally but do not throw that often on my boat locked up and One lakewood box with a nice selection of assorted Baits that I always use and have confidence in. This seems to be a lot easier for me anyway, So If I fish with someone else on their boat I an take the One box. This way I can have one Tackle Box on my Boat and the rest of them are on my boat where I have easy excess when I need one of them...... NOW IS THE PROBLEM""""""""" Does anyone know of something I can drop in this compartment to avoid My Hooks from RUSTING ..as I am sure they will????? I was told Pete Mania had something but was not able to find anything.... Any help would be appreciated.................Mike

Put them away only when they are dry. If you can't, dry them when you get home.

you can use silca gel "the little packets that come with almost anything that takes batterys"
Silica gel is a hard granular, non-toxic and non-corrosive desiccant with the appearance of crushed glass. It is slightly softer than ordinary window glass, odorless, insoluble and a non-conductor of electricity.

Silica gel has a very strong affinity for water, which gives it an adsorption capacity of over 40% of its own weight at 100% relative humidity. It is compatible with most materials except strong alkalis and hydrofluoric acid. It is resistant to most acidic streams and is therefore used in the drying or purification of acid vapors or liquids.

In bagged form, silica gel provides the static dehumidification needed for the protection of many materials and packaged items to prevent corrosion, mold, and mildew.

Silica gel can be reused after being fully saturated with water. To reactivate, simply heat at 2500 F for approximately 8 hours

i dont reuse em cause last time i checked my stove didnt go that high!!

I use bigger packets forgot where i got them as i only use them in the winter when my stuff is stored downstairs

There are several tackleboxes that brag about being rust resistant, or sell strips of what looks like cardboard to put in with your lures to prevent rust. You should be able to buy these separately. Look around in the tacklebox section at gander mtn, cabelas etc. Putting lures away dry just doesn't do it in a humid environment.

I have rounded up a bunch of silica packets from my girlfriend's and my shoe boxes. I throw those in tackle/hook boxes, but certainly don't rely on them. I would suggest storing your lures in your house and not in your boat.

These do the trick for me. They are also used/developed by the military for their dry storage devices.

Mike

I started using the product that Mania promotes (The Inhibitor) last year. I had problems with hooks rusting in tackle boxes. They make these strips you can buy. I have been using them and thus far they seem to help out in some cases. If you put them in a plastic plano type box with baits they seem to work good. I also have been putting them in my lakewoods and they seem to be helping. They seem to work the best for me in the smallest confined areas.

I put instant rice in my saltwater hook box, it really cut down on on the hooks getting rusty. I'm not sure if it will work for your application, but it might be worth a shot.

Here's an easy trick - after sharpening your hooks, paint the freshly exposed metal with a permanent magic marker. The hooks will not rust unless/until the ink is somehow rubbed off. After fishing, bring your boat box indoors and leave it open to allow wet baits to dry.
