| I just heard a rumor about Mercs being built in China with Tohatsu(sp) powerheads. The Verado is USA made and 90horse and under is built in China.
Is this true or just a rumor? |

Location: Norway | I also heard/read that alot of places, even read that Tohatsu makes some of the parts in Yamaha motors. But I heard that Tohatsu produces Merc. from 30hp and down.
Edit: Heres one of the links I found once: http://www.onlineoutboards.com/m_help.html#p_2
"
Does TOHATSU make NISSAN? Does TOHATSU also make MERCURY?
Yes. Tohatsu makes ALL Nissan outboards and many smaller HP Mercury outboards. We do not sell Mercury outboards as Tohatsu and Nissan are considerably less expensive than the Mercury label."

| Merc's has a state of the art plant in China, and they make the 30-60 HP motors. They may make the 75 and 90's one day. The Opti's and the Verado's are made in Fond du Lac. The small HP motors are a joint venture with Tohatsu. They are not the exact same motors as the Tohatsu and Nissan. |

| My dealer said that Tohatsu is making the outboards at their plant and putting the Merc label on them. He said that nissan and merc have the same internal parts, just a different label. |

If I recall prior to that Yamaha did the same thing for Merc on the lower horse power motors... |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | Yamaha built the power heads for the Merc fourstrokes up until I think last year, when that deal ended. Almost everything now is built in house in Fond Du Lac. |

That I knew, but I have had quite a few merc or mariner two strokes over the years that I was under the impression that Yamaha built. These were in the late 80's early 90's... |

I think they are made in Kentucky... |

| The 80's Mariner 2 strokes were made in Japan, but they were Merc designs. Not sure if it was Yamaha or not. There was a lot of technology sharing between Merc and Yamaha back then. Most of the tech knowledge was flowing in Yamaha's direction.
Only the 75-115 HP 4 strokes were yamaha powerheads the last couple years, and that ended 2 years ago. The Midrange, 30-60 HP have been all Merc for several years before that. |

| Merc went to china because they can build the products cheaper over there than here, which in turn puts more money in mercs pocket. Pretty soon every manufacturer will be over seas, it's all about the $$$ and nothing to do with the pride of being able to say "Made in the U.S.A." |

Joe, i think the auto industry proved who does a better job, it might be about quality just as much as it about money. You need to look at facts, not just emotions. I don't think built in the USA is about pride at this point...it is about money.... |

it's not "going to happen" ... it already did. the future of the worlds technology and quality are happening in places like shanghai, guangzhou, shinzen, ho chi minh city, taipei, kuala lumpur, dubai, mumbai, phuket ... oh, and if you've never heard of those cities you might want to google what's been going on there the last 10 years ... it might blow your mind. |
