Location: chicago | If I were to catch a norhtern, perch or bluegill of legal size, would I be able to use that fish as bait? In Florida I was taught a way to harness a fish with cooking string and attach a single hook. You would be amazed at how good you could cast and mimick a dying or injured fish. Thanks |

Location: Illinois | From my understanding of the rules, which I read from time to time when I'm fishing UpNorth, it IS legal to use bluegill or perch as live bait IF:
A) they are of legal size
B) caught on the lake you are fishing and part of your bag limit
I don't think you're allowed to use Northern in this same way, however. |

| According to the handbook, as long as the fish is legal size and you count it towards your daily bag limit, you can use it as bait. |

If you are serious koi is not a good idea, as is bringing any fish from out of state. Koi would be an invasive species, proably a heavy fine. You are not allowed to use non purchased bait from lake A in Lake B.
Now that I just most likely bit on an April fools joke, I will sign off.
stugots4u - You can use any legal size size fish, from the lake you are fishing, as bait as long as it counts against your bag limit. You cannot use a fish from Lake A as bait on Lake B. The new live bait regulations prohibit this for any bait caught or purchased from a non-licensed dealer. (hope I got that all correct, check the regs before you trust everything I just wrote) I have seen guys using walleye, bullheads and bluegills over the years. |

Location: chicago | Thanks Coach, It works great where I learned this method. You can actually make these fish look like they are in trouble. Koi for sure are a no no. But you be surprized how many are swimming around the harbors that people let go!!! I am also very surprized hpw big they get!!! |

Location: chicago | I am sorry, I meant the Lake Mich. harbors down in Chicago. I guess they get too big for there fish tanks and they let them go. Actually there is a pick of a muskie swimming with a koi in its mouth from the Fox chain. One mans pet is now a meal. |

| Muskellunged is correct. Although you can use anything that can be counted in your daily legal bag. A snake pike that is legal could be used. |
