| when you guys buy a brand new bait, do you guys sharpen the hooks no matter what? or do you guys think they are sharp right out of the package?

Location: Kodiak, AK | I leave my Gamakatsu hooks alone for the most part. I got a box of 10/0 Octocpus the other day that needed touched up. But I for sure sharpen anything not chemically sharpened before I tie on it.

| 99.99% of hooks on musky baits (not fly hooks, different story) aren't as sharp as they could be out of the box. Most aren't anywhere NEAR it, because they are bronzed AFTER being sharpened. You have to at least get that layer of bronze away to have them sharp.
I sharpen everything, though. It takes a minute to touch up a full set of trebles. If it won't catch on my thumbnail, it won't penetrate the bony mouth of an esox. |

Location: Cherry Valley IL | Sharpening your hooks is a must. I found that out the hard way years ago. But there is a right and wrong way to do that. I have taken people out who told me they new how to sharpen hooks. They whould have been better of just buying owner hooks and saving them selves the embarrasment. You dont want to just sharpen the tip. The key is to elongate the point. Think about trying to make it look like a needle. I always go out towards the point. Make sure to do all sides equally. |
