My wife was given a Six Star reel by a friend. Looks like it has sat aroung awhile. Missing one cap/cover on the crank. Seems to work ok. Needs a good clean up. When were these made? I have never heard of this model. Thanks. What would I use to 'spray down' this reel with, before I lube it?

You can probably read the production year from the number on the reelseat. I also have a sixstar reel, which I use for trolling, since it has no Instant Anti Reverse. I did "beef" it up with some more bearings, so it actually casts pretty well. The number on the reelseat says: 070111/05 on mine, which means; 07=when they first was produced, in this case 1997, 01=which version, when the 2 middle digits says 00, its the first edition(i never buy reels with 00 ), 01=2nd edition etc. 11=which year my particular reel was made, in this case 2001. I dont remember what 05 stands for, but I might think its the production month
Ive never found out why 07=97 etc., but it is. I dont know when they started with this numbering either, but older reels, have a different numbering.
There is also some models called Five and Seven, theyre basically cheaper models of the c series, and it is possible to get an IAR bearing, but theyre a pain to install.
There is a good clean up and lube tutorial somewhere on this site for Abu's.
Hope this helps

Thanks. It too is a 97 but it has the dreaded '00' in da middle. Well, she got it free so what can we say. It was loaded with about 20 lb mono. Reely old and kinked. Must have been used for trolling too. Again, thaks for the input.

Dreaded and dreaded, I had to bite the dust when I got a few of the new models of ssc3 (after they totally revamped them when they released the Record) and Im totally satisfied with it, even if its 00 version.
But think about it, theyre both 97 models, and they even made a change during that year...
