| Is it overkill, to have one in the back and the bow? Cabelas has a pair of 520c's for under $1200 in thier boating/marine catalog. One puck, one power lead, one transducer. Once you move to the bow to cast, is the gps that critical? You need a sonar up front to keep you on the spot, is that enough? Just like some input on this idea. Thanks, Bruce. |

Location: Richland Center, WI. | I like the idea of being able to purchase a package with one in the front and one in the back that are networked together. I would prefer a little larger screen on the console than the 5" on the 520 but that is my old eyes looking at the locator. You can buy the package from Cabelas with different locators so you could use the 520 on the front and a larger screen on the console but it does increase the cost. Overkill? I think not!

Location: Grafton, WI | One thing to consider with this package, is the two do not share map software. You will need to purchase two map cards to have the GPS mapping on both. I just got an email repsonse back from Lowrance on the subject. |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I certainly don't think it is overkill. I have a GPS at the helm and a gps/sonar combo at the bow. Being that I am fishing more reefs that are hard to find with just a sonar, I upgraded. since I have a console rig, I cannot turn the head around to face the bow, plus it would require turing around constantly to see where the boat is located.
I feel it gives me an edge to stay off (or on) structure as compared to not having it.

Location: On your favorite spot | need GPS on the bow. i got one unit and rigged the wires up the side of the boat, put a RAM on the front and back (i have a tiller) so i can switch it and tuck the excess cord up under the side of the boat into some clips i installed.
if i only had one mount, GPS would be on the bow. think about fishing a big rock reef in the middle of the lake with no markers. need that GPS along with your sonar. |

| I have Lowrance GPS/Sonars at the console, and the bow, networked. I have the HD version with the built in maps on the console, and have chips for use in the bow unit. Sometimes I will use a chip in the console unit.
The best thing I like about having the GPS in the bow unit is when I am running long distances, I can put a big compass on the bow unit, and watch that without taking my eyes of the water in front of me. Pretty handy when in the rough stuff, and trying to get out or back. Especially during a tourney.
Overkill? Nope. |

| I have 3 one in front, one in back and one on the console. this way I do not have to ask my partner the depth all the time. I prefer to have the front transducer in front and the back in back and then my partner communicate drop offs and bait as needed.

| I was wondering about that card thing, if i had to pull out the card from the tiller unit and install it up front when I go there to cast or jig. And I am constantly asking whoever is in the back about the depth. Right now i have a Garmin in the back, that is all. I will have a sonar up front this year. The gps there was my concern. Thanks. |

Location: Waukesha, WI | I will have networked GPS on the bow this season so I can retrace trails/routes and mark waypoints at the bow without having to run back to the console to add them.
@Shep, are you going to add the broadband sounder? |

| Only if I stick with Lowrance, and then upgrade to a 113 and a 522. Pretty sure my 111 and 334 won't do the broadband. Probably not this year. Maybe next year on the new boat.
Mike, we still have a date for the water. Let's get that planned!

Location: Grafton, WI | I'm currently setting up networked 334's at the console and bow. Console unit transducer in back, with bow transducer to Universal Sonar Minn Kota. I was thinking it was too much at first, but not anymore.... no more strained necks to see the console unit or having to move to punch in a waypoint. |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | The only Lowrance units that are available with built in maps are the HD models. Stands for Hard Drive. Otherwise, if you own another model that is non-HD model, you must purchase the chips.
So models like the Lowrance LCX-113HD, LCX-38 HD and LCX-28 HD are the models that Lowrance offers with the built in maps and sonar combo. The rest of the current models do not come with built in mapping. Now if your looking for just gps models, the current globalmap 9200, 8200, and 7200 are the models that come with the built in mapping.
Your going to have to purchase two chips if you do not network the two units together. Refer back to Shep's post about networking. And no, I haven't seen a deal for two chips for $300. A deal like that is no different then buying one for $150. Approximately about what they cost pending what model chip you buy.

"Mapping is not shared through the network. If you are wanting higher detailed mapping in both units, you will have to purchase a card for each unit.

| Me again. I have a 27 series in the bow for the 55PD and a smal starting battery in the back for the small Honda. Just picked up a Cableas 2 bank charger that I have yet to install. Most fisherpeople, I have read, hook toyz to the starting battery and leave the juice in the others for the electric motor's use. The Honda wont juice the rear battery unless I run it wide open for awhile. Is it still advisable to hook a dual 520c system to just the starting battery? Thanks. |
