A table at http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/news/DNRNews_Lookup.asp?id=105#art1 shows survey results that estimate 233,000 muskies were caught in Wisconsin in 2006-07. The table also shares that over 12,000 of those muskies were harvested. Not sure the margin of error for these numbers, but this info will likely be disturbing to many of you because that's a lot of muskies but that's still a 95% release rates which really isn't too bad. Thoughts?

95% might be pretty high, but i'd still rather light myself on fire than keep one out of every 20 fish i caught. And it's actually a little higher, almost 12,500 kept. It does make me wonder how skewed the figures are, since the data was collected from a small group of fishermen. I think a handful of anglers catch the bulk of muskies in the state, and a smaller handful keep the bulk of them. I've heard of people keeping every legal musky they catch, and know there are people catching 50-100 muskies a year and keeping none. It depends too much on who was surveyed, but these figures are definitely troubling.

Now you can add probably 2% at least to it as fish that were kept because they would not have made it. That makes it 97% or 98%. That muskies anglers is excellent in any state for any kind of fish. I think to expect more is reaching for the stars and it just won't happen. Lets work on on another area that will improve the fishery and be happy with that percentge.

Actually, I think the % kept will be higher because the percentage is out of total fish caught, not total legal fish caught. I agree with Don, the only way to reduce the number is with increasing the size limits. Even though 12.493 muskies is under 6% it just seems like too many fish.

I think when your purposeful harvest is less than your probable mortality from hooking and handling the fish you do release, I think you're doing pretty darn good.

I'd bet it isn't much (if any) better in other places that have muskies.
