i dont use many bucktails but i have some double 10 bucktails. i've caught just a few fish on them but i would like to know if most of you BURN them or fish them deeper. do you let the fish tell you what to do or just dictate which fish you will catch(only active ones)? i am kind of new to muskies (2 years) but i have few problems locating fish and even raising them, but they just seem to look at me like an idiot and swim away.

any advice is welcome

A fairly quick retrieve is my preferred method. It allows you to cover a lot of water and won't wear you down casting like that all day. But you definitely have to let the fish dictate things. I'll always try to mix in a few retrieves where I'm burning the bait as well as slow rolling it a few times. If the fish are finicky and only want it one way, this will help figure out what they want.

Really depends on the mood of the fish. No right or wrong answer here. Definately mix is different retrieves. Even where you are pumping the rod like you are working a jerkbait just to give it that extra burst of speed. Don't shy away from a stoccato type retrieve on spinnerbaits. A guy I know does this where he'll make a hard half crank on the reel, then just crawl it for the other half. It's subtle yet very very very effective.

This past summer an interesting pattern developed on bucktails where you had to crank those things as hard and fast as you could. Beyond bulging. They had to be basically skipping across the surface and they were getting destroyed. The mood of the fish dictated that.

until september i usually use a normal/quick retreive unless i'm just getting lazy follows and then i'll speed up more, if i'm in shallow sand or when the water starts to cool in early fall i'll definitely be burning. biggest fish i've ever seen ate a burner but couldn't get her in the boat.

Fast ! The faster the more vibration, and the less time a fish has to think about it (if that is possible)
A reaction strike is what we are going for here, and pulling 46" of line per crank is fast and less tiresome on the body, So go get you a fast pick up reel and burn those big bladed bucktails.

I'll second Ulbian's comments, it really depends. Put in your time and be observant and you'll find what the fish want. Regarding speed, here are a few suggestions:

1) Fish a double-10 slow after sunset. Slow-rolling these things in the dark has been a huge producer where I fish. Slow down after dark. Work the bait just fast enough to keep the blades turning and keep the bait off the bottom.

2) Burn the bait when the fish are shallow. This is hard work and takes the right equipment to be able to do it without too much suffering. When the fish are on shallow rocks, sand, and even shallow weed flats, fast is the way to go.

3) Fish slow along deep weed lines or around deep reefs. Working these baits deep is an under-utilized presentation. You can get them from Spank Baits that are made heavier and work deeper. This is another slow presentation.

I don't seem to catch as many fish at the 'in-between' speed; most fish are caught really fast or really slow.

Musky12,
Ulbian has a lot of good info and I was just saying that for me(last year) burning big bucktails worked better than a slow retreive.
To burn the big bucktails fast, (bulging, just under the surface) you need to have a good well made reel (6.1-6.3:1) with a power handle.

Last season I used a Luna 300 but had to work a lot harder, so now I use the Trinidad 16n.
Others and less expensive are Abu 7000i, Torium, penn975, just to name a few .
As i said before these reels are built for the larger #10-#13 bladed bucktails (or Large lures) and takes a lot of stress off of my old body.

P.S. I haven't done much night fishing, so I would listen to others that have that experince.

DAYTIME - Burn them with my TRINIDAD 16N, 46" line pickup, can you say smoke them.
NITETIME - as slow as I can with my 7000ihsn, and as shallow as I can get without hanging the bait up .
DAYTIME I'm looking for a reaction strike
NITETIME Let the fish feel the water move from the 13 blades
