Suckers in Spring?

I think that most of us have soaked suckers in the fall, but have any of you tried them early in the season? If so, circle hooks or quick strike rigs? Just curious, because I plan on testing a bunch of different (for me at least) techniques this year.

They work as good now, as then.

I agree with ToddM., yes they work until the water get's warm, I would say mid-sixties not that the muskies won't hit them, it becomes more of a problem keeping them alive. Size we use them up to 14 inches. Do they work you be the judge in March this year in my boat not all caught by me 44, 44, 41, and 34, plus a couple of really big fish lost. Good fishing, Al

Tone,

I use them all the time in the spring, like Al said they are hard to keep alive once the water starts to heat up.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will definately drown a few suckers when the season opens. I will let you know if I have any success, even though it won't be for about a month.

Tone...how will you "drown" the suckers...by holding them up in the air until they go limp in your hand?[;)]...like Ralph said once the water starts to heat up, they struggle to live; cut the heat back to low! Sorry dude...couldn't resist...right Rob!![:sun:]

Tone you should have at least one out at all time until water reaches 60's. I will run suckers with my home madequick strike rigs all day opening weekend. I use slip bobber setups and drag 4 to 5 rigs. On Pewaukee Lake its legal to troll. This has worked for me every opener. This year I went to fluorocarbon leaders, will see if it ups the numbers for me. Good luck !!

LOL Sponge!

I believe that the "drowning" of the poor suckers will be something along those lines! I usually like to 'punish' them a bit before I drown them by sticking a sharp hook or two into them. Actually, I always figured that when I had a dead sucker on the other end of my line that it's cause of death was drowning!!! [:p]

ABSOLUTELY!!
I RECOMMEND QUICK STRIKE RIGS. THEY HAVE A MUCH LOWER MORTALITY RATE THAN THE SINGLE HOOK RIGS THAT YOU HAVE TO LET THEM SWALLOW THE BAIT/HOOK BEFORE SETTING THE HOOK. THEY ARE KINDER TO THE SUCKERS AND THE MUSKIES!!
