would a 6' 10" rod work ok for d8 bucktails like showgirls?i use it for jerks, gliders, and soft plastics but i want see if i can use bucktails with it as well.the reel on it has a high speed gear ratio would it be ok to cast showgirls with a high gear ratio?i know high ratio reels are not able to cast d10s for it would burn the gears but showgirls have quite a bit smaller blades so showgirls should be ok with this combo right?

thanx!

The problem with using short, stiff rods to cast heavy bucktails is that it's a lot of work. The rod doesn't do any of the work for you. When you cast gliders, they're heavy and aerodynamic, thus the rod length doesn't matter as much. The rod will work though.

Musky-12,
The longer the better with those blade baits, in my opinion. I don't touch anything under 8 1/2 feet anymore.

But if he has the rod already and doesn't want/can't fork out the money for a new rod and its a h or xh then I would say it would work just fine.

A 6'10...no way.

You are going to have put a whole lot of effort into your cast to get the bucktail out there. Plus with it being so short, fighting a lip hooked musky would be a losing battle as well.

I would HIGHLY not suggest using a 6'10 for bucktails....or anything for that matter.

How did all those muskies get caugt the last 75+ years with out those long rods? You longrodders are full of it,; yes a long rod is good but a short rod WILL WORK.

Brian, NO WAY MAN!!!! LOL

And yes, a 4 footer would also work...so would a broom handle, a thick tree branch....

But why use it when there are other and better things available to us?

Do you want to use a 75 year old rod and reel???? Or a new outfit that was made for your applications?

thanx for all believing in the short rods:) i dont have much money to spare so i cant get a rod like all you guys can can.its hard enough buying gas, lures, nets, and all the other stuff let a lone a rod/reel combo.personally its not to hard for me to work baits all day im young and i can cast big baits for a long time believe it or not.if its hard to use a short rod than i will deal with it....longer rod may be a weeeeeeeee bit better but the fish dont care what length the rod is do they?

Quite often I put down my 8'6" rod and grab the 6'11" jerkbait rod to throw tails with just because it is a nice change of pace.

if your question is "will it work ok?" the answer is yes, it'll work "ok".
lots of fish have been caught on shorter rods, and certain applications can even be easier with a short rod.

long rods have their place, and in many ways make certain tasks easier, especially with bucktails. casting is easier, figure-8s are way easier/deeper/better, and the length of rod can be more "forgiving" when fighting a fish by helping you keep tension on the line so you don't lose as many lightly hooked fish.

the short rod will be ok if that's what you've got available.
a longer rod can be even better; try one out if you get the chance.

musky12,

Anybody can easily put a few things on e-bay...make $200-300 in no time...
That can easily buy a new rod and reel.

I cash in my change jug to by $400 worth of trolling motor batteries every year....
I sell old baits to pay for the tax on my new boats every year....

There is always a few ways to come across a few hundred bucks.
