I'm also in the market. I get about 15 mpg normal driving and I'm told I will increase that about 20 percent with a chip and even better highway mileage towing a boat. Thanks

FYI, I work at a Dodge dealership. Any diesel reported with a chip will recind all remaining warranty on the vehicle, including any non engine related warranty. Could get pretty expensive!

Guys,

I have been driving diesels for 19 yrs. now and still love them.

The truck that I drive is a 1 ton dully that can pull a house if if had to.
7.3 turbo with chip.

had the chip taken out last summer because the computer screwed up and went from 15 mpg highway to 12 mpg with less power( 60-80 hp ). Had the chip checked out and reinstalled. No problems. 210,000 miles (2001)

My other company truck is a 2005 ,F-250 that has a 6.0 turbo with a chip and gets 19-20 mpg and also can pull about anything out there. 142,000 miles.

I had a 1997 f-250 with out the chip and got 540,000 miles out of it before I gave it to one of my employees, He just replaced the glow plugs and said it runs just fine.

TIP....DO REGULAR MAINTENANCE.... Change oil every 5,000 miles !!

Jerome, I drive a 99 7.3 powerstroke. What kind of chip do you use?

Sled...have you considered some other after-market mods before going to a chip?

i've got a buddy who tows a 5th wheel and he was looking into getting a chip.
before getting one he replaced his exhaust (larger and straighter) and his injectors (more efficient) and got a big jump in both horsepower and fuel efficiency.
essentially, make sure the actual engine parts are right before messing with the controls.

I have a 2007 1/2 Silverado with the LLM engine-crew cab-4x4-added a Banks air intake and a Workhorse brand module- and I get between 3-5 MPG better when towing my boat @ 70 mph.

I forgot to mention that the dully also has the Banks air intake system, and the chip is from Banks.

I pull a 11,000 lb trailer all over the place and can still go 65-70 up alot of the Mtns. in Co, Mt,Ut, Ca.. out west..

had a 05 dually cummins ho for a couple months ... chipped, got scared for the same reasons mentioned by ghoti and after getting like 12 - 13mpg ... and why i'm asking before doing it to my current 05 f-250 ... heard from some guy that he chipped for like 400 bucks without having to do anything to the exhaust and why i'm asking before i go there ... haven't done it ... YET, but want to.

hoping to continue to hear more good info from people who have a diesel.

the f-250 i don't believe will make that much horsepower with or without the chip ...

do you know smokin' joe?

so, did you do exhaust too? ... total cost of chip, install, intake and exhaust? ... were you happy with what you did? ... my cummins HO in the dually did the same thing as you mentioned and i got scared out of it essentially by the dodge dealer. i used to pull 5th wheels and horse trailers.

the truck i'm running now has 118,000 miles ... bought it new and have decided to keep running it and talked to some ford guys with a chip ... can't remember the name. they said it was like 400 bucks and they didn't do anything otherwise to the truck ...

where do you go to learn the best products to use, whether or not you need to do intake and exhaust stuff .... and can you really do it without spending like 1300 - 1500 bucks?

Sled,

I bought the 2001 dully off of a guy in 2003 with 38,000 miles on it and it already had the 2 1/4" banks exhaust and chip on it .... but I think it cost him around $ 1,600.- $1,800. for the entire package and came with exhaust temp, tranny temp and turbo presure gages... It's a nice set up, and works for me.

I have talked to some guys that say the chip will run you $500.- $700. depending on what HP you want to increase to.

Also living in Mn. four wheel drive is a must.

Hey Sled, just having a little fun with ya, cant pull the wool over my eyes.......LOL......Anyways, you will not get 500hp with just a the $400 chip. You'll have to get the intake and exhaust package also, those diesels have to breath to make big HP........ I'm assuming you have the 6.0 powerstroke in your 05? Personally the 6.0 has plenty of HP and the only reason they chip it is to get better fuel mileage.....My buddy has an 03 1 ton with the 7.3, he went all out with the Banks total package which ran him a couple thousand installed, on a dyno he is getting 512hp!!!!! That truck will break all 4 tires loose on dry asphalt..... Also saw a chip that has an electronic dial with 3 settings on a dodge cummins that you can adjust between stock, medium, and heavy, has the dial in the dash and can adjust it on the fly. Anyone else hear of that one??????

Sled, so yes I know a "little" about chips.........

joe ... the one these guys are talking about is the "super-chip"? ... do you know anything about those? also, yeah it's the 6.0 liter powerstroke ... just how much mileage is available from the chip? .... hearing 4 and it sounds a bit high.

Have a friend with an 06 Super Duty, who went the Mike Troyer chip route. Added exhaust, and the thing gets great mileage. His programmer has three levels. Mileage, towing, and MAX HP. That setting will belch black smoke, and beat alot muscle cars in the 1/4 mile! He doesn't use that level often. If you get too radical, exhaust temp needs to be monitored, too. I'll look for the link.

Mayb go over to WalleyeFirst and post for Jayman. He's done some work on his Chebby.

It's real common out here to chip diesels since the air is thinner (altitude). I read once that a diesel needs to consume something like 18,000 gallons of air for each gallon of fuel. Getting more efficient intakes and exhaust are probably the appropriate routes, but the chips are easier, so that's the way most people go. There's precious few times one actually needs more power than a stock diesel, but better fuel economy is a reasonable quest.

sled, check out some of the diesel performace magazines. diesel power is a good one. you will have to wade through the $100000 'LOOK AT ME!!!!111" trucks (which is cool to see a 3/4 ton that'll run a 10.79 1/4 mile...), but there is some good info to be found.

sounds like the bully dog system. that one seems to be the most popular for the dodges, which is why i'm guessing that. you can get the same setup for the banks and edge systems as well.

Sled,
Go with a ATS Intercooler, ATS wastegate monitor and put headers and exhaust on it. Little more cost, but you aren't doing anything to artificially modify the drivetain from the factory standpoint. I know that Ford offers a set of headers for the 6.o, and some dealers will install the Banks on-site. The ATS Wastegate housing is a replacement part, so there's no issue with that either.
I did all of the above to mine and was hitting 14 pulling a 4horse slant. (loaded) Stand alone I was easily hitting 20-22.
There's a website called FiveR, can't remember the exact addy, but it has some good info.

Sled, I have a "super chip" in my 5.4 gas motor, all the chip does is raise my shift points, deleted the fuel shutoff at 98mph, and also gave me about 1.5 miles more a gallon.........

I do not know anything about that certain chip for the diesels.......

If you want MAX mileage and power, you'll have to do the intake and exhaust as well as a chip...............

I know you guys are mostly talking about diesels, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the gasers. I drive an '02 Dodge Ram, 5.9L with a 360 and I average about 11.5 mpg. Its a little bit worse hauling my boat around. I would love to find a chip that would give me better mileage all of the time so I don't have to drive beater so much ('92 S10). There is an added on chip in it, which was already there when I bought it, and this is how the mileage has always been. Maybe the chip has gone bad. I don't know, and I surely don't know that much about this kind of stuff in general. I'd like to hear what you guys think.
Thanks.

For gas vehicles, a chip won't do too much. As much as I love the old 360...it is a gas hog. K&N filter and a freer exhaust will help a little bit.

I've already got a K&N filter and have 3" exhaust. Maybe there is nothing else I can do.

I currently don't have a diesel, but several of my friends do and i've had a couple in the past. All have been modified, usually with an intake setup, chip and exhaust. Most get better gas mileage on the freeway once "played" with, but that's relative to the weight of your right foot. My next truck with either be a ford with a 6.0 or a GMC with the 6.6 and it will be getting a chip and exhaust at the bare minimum. I do a lot of tuning/playing with turbo-gas engines, just can't leave anything I own alone....bikes, trucks, cars, boats....none are safe!
