| I'm currently towing my 1850 Fish hawk with a 98 ford conversion van. Runs great, but tough on gas and 10 yrs. old this year. I wouldn't mind a smaller tow vehicle that gets better mpg, but still would tow on 500-1000 mile trips. Any suggestions? What are you towing your Fish hawk with? Thanks |

| I have an 1850 Fishhawk as well and purchased a 2007 Honda Ridgeline and it tows the 1850 just fine. Gas mileage is OK but i really never checked it. Without towing I get 20-22 mpg. |

Location: Racine, Wi | Although I've never actually calculated the milage, my way of viewing it is this. I can make it from Racine to Minocqua while pulling my Fishhawk, loaded up with too much equipment, 2 kids, a wife, a dog, and a cat and still have a quarter of a tank of gas left. I drive an 05 Expedition. I think that would be decent gas milage. Just make sure to keep a low gas tank on the boat.

Location: Owatonna,MN | I have a 2004 Ford Excursion V-10 engine that gets 13-14 mpg towing or not towing. Tons of room and will pull tree stumps!! I have this vehicle for sale if you are interested.

I know that it runs close to transporting live bait, but apparently we can leave the little pain in the butt furball alone for over a week at a time. |

| Are you looking new? The new GM(Chevy and GMC) fullsize pickups, and SUV's get great mileage when not towing, and decent when towing. If this is a full time driven vehicle, your avg will be pretty decent overall. |

| i go the overkill route: 1600 Fish hawk SC, pulled by an '03 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins turbo diesel. i've seen 18.5 mpg towing, over 20 not towing. don't expect that out of the new 6.7L Cummins, i've been hearing reports in the 16s. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i had the '02 dodge and had similar results as you post for mileage, then i got an '05 dually 3500 with the HO Cummins and saw as low as 13 (granted a different rear-end) ... so i sold it after 2 months and now run the '05 Ford TurboDiesel and get 17-18 towing and 20 without ...
fuel costs are nuts so i balance it by riding my bike in the summers for popping around town ... once you drive a diesel it's hard to consider anything but eh? |

| oh definitely. my company work truck is an F-150, and it feels like a dog compared to the cummins. diesel is the way to go. plus, you can chip 'em and get even better mileage. one of the guys i work with has a chipped '06 cummins 3500 and he sees between 25-28mpg on the highway. not much worse towing, either. |

Location: Owatonna,MN | Have trouble believing 28+ MPg even with a chipped diesel. Also if you take into account that a diesel engine is a $5000 to $7000 option, fuel is between 30 and 50 cents per gallon more than gas. Now do the math. You would have to pull that boat ALONG WAYS to make up the difference. Yes the diesels might get better mileage, but if you figure those numbers? Not worth it.To each his own I guess. Some people just feel cool to own a diesel. I wouldn't own one, and I was/am a trained diesel mechanic. |
