| Im a old guy. Started musky fishing back in 1970. We were taught to take a pair of pliers and tighten our star drags as tight as we could. When you got a musky close to the boat you pushed the line release button and kept the tension on the spool with your thumb. You needed the star drag tight so you could get a good hook set without any slipage. Do most of you guys set your drag the same way? | |

| Me too! Hand tight but all the way down and thats on Shimano`s, Abu`s, and Luna. I myself never push the button after I cast, figure 8 and set, even a little fish can get line if it wants. | |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Most drags on reels today are junk, they are not smooth, so you crank, lock down your drag, that is old school, go to http://www.smoothdrag.com get yourself a set of Carbontex drag washers for your reel, and you will have a drag that is so smooth, no more locking down your drag. I read about guys that fight a big fish with a lock down drag, they release the spool when they do a figure 8 and hold the spool with there thumb, one slip and that fish is gone. Also you can polish the metal washers and apply some Cal's drag grease to have a state of the art drag system. | |
