These photos attached below are somewhat old (this past fall). I have nothing too recent to describe the subject that I am talking about.... Just imagine that the tools aren't on the casting deck, nor in boat.

I would like to install a storage compartment beneath my small casting deck. My deck is maybe 4ft long by a little less than 5ft wide. This storage compartment I am thinking of building would be for the trolling motor battery and possibly rain gear. If I do this, it means that I won't have a 50lb battery just sitting randomly in the middle of the boat while fishing.

One of my good family friends would be assisting me with the cutting and what-not as he is a carpenter/ steel-worker by trade.

My only problem is that I have no idea what the hell is beneath my deck. In addition, if I wrongly start cutting holes, I do not want to be doing something detrimental to the performance of this boat.

Would anyone have an idea of what lies beneath the casting deck? Foam? Compacted air? Absolutely nothing?

My dad (my marine expert) and I have absolutely zero clue what's beneath the deck. The boat is a Lund Guide Series 315 - 1979 model, if that helps.

If anyone has any ideas or advice, it's much appreciated.

Thank you!

Why not extend the deck and use that space for the batteries? Win win situation.

Posting the brand of your boat might help, there is likely some floatation foam up there somewhere. m

It's there, mikie.

I like the idea of just adding an extension, and putting the batteries there. Or call Lund and ask them. They should have the drawings on that boat somewhere.

That thought just came to mind recently and I too like that procedure much better than cutting open some holes.

Does anyone have decent step-by-step directions and check-list of materials I would need for installing a deck extension? (i'm totally new to this stuff).

thanks for the help!

PS - I'm being told that beneath the deck lies foam, and that I should not be messing around with it, at all.
